Iron Maiden is one of the most underrated, vitally important, & influential metal bands, ever. In most cities in America, rock radio all but ignores this band, with the exception of one or two tracks. Fortunately, I grew up in Texas 30 miles from San Antonio, home of one of the greatest metal stations in the US, 99.5 KISS. Home of "the Godfather of Rock & roll", Joe Anthony, who helped tremendously in the careers of Metallica, Def Leppard, Queensryche, & Iron Maiden. How many stations in America would play a 7+ minute song from an unknown band (Metallica, Fade To Black, 1984), especially with such dark subject matter?

Sorry, I got off on a rant....Iron Maiden is one of the most consistantly amazing bands, ever. I'll probably get a lot of shit for this, but another grossly under appreciated metal band is The Scorpions. If you think not, realize that they have been recording & touring since at least 1974. anyway....Steve Harris & the boys have always got my vote....

Underrated? Maybe only in America. They seem like freaking Gods to metalheads everywhere else. And I don't see why that radio DJ wouldn't play Fade to Black, it's one of Metallica's more popular stuff.

gruel, I'm talking about when it 1st came out in 1984 (Fade to Black, that is)! VERY few stations would play a 7+ minute song from an unknown band in the mid eighties. Obviously, there were select stations sprinkled all over the US who would, but now, with the monopoly that is FM radio, few if any DJs have the freedom to play whatever they want, & a song like that from an unknown band would never see a single spin on modern FM radio. It pains me to say it, but Metallica are a "classic rock" band! So their singles will NOW get airplay. If it isn't on the corporate play list, forget it. & I know Iron Maiden are gods everywhere, I'm simply talking about general recognition as being an amazing band with amazing songs, metal or not. It took years, but Black Sabbath finally started getting some Kudos for their abilities & influence.
