Joseph William Kittinger is a former U.S. Air Force pilot and military officer. He jumps from 20 miles above the earth and his speed increases as he comes into the earth's atmosphere and shatters the speed of sound.

if you exceed terminal velocity due to lack of atmosphere, then abruptly enter the oxygen filled atmosphere; well wouldnt that be like hitting a brick wall? im no physicist, just curious.

I think the transition from lack of atmospgere to one with oxygen isnt "abrupt" it is gradual so it wouldnt make much difference maybe slow him down abit.

wonder why hybrids of balloons and rockets aren't used to go into space...

edit:Here we go. But this is really old news...theoretical payloads for balloons was 3,500 lbs though. More than enough to carry me ^_^

the amount of atmospheric particals increace gradually in normal atmosphere i believe terminal volocity for your average human is around 120 mph

The speed of sound is lower in the upper atmosphere than at ground level, this means he was traveling at supersonic speeds. Despite this, Kittinger would have had no sensation of speed until he approached the cloud deck.
