The X1 did ignite rocket engines... he just waited until he did a downwind turn and then came closer to the flightline.
Otherwise the burn would not have been as visible and it may have taken the X1 out of range.

The electric starter, nicknamed "the persuader" sure saves the work hand flipping and chopped fingers from backfires.
The only way to go! (especially with multies.

They can also be started using your finger... putting the motor at top dead center in the stroke and flicking it as hard as you can... Somewhat dangerous in that older people with slow reflexes wind up getting their fingers caught in the prop shortly after it started... Some choose to use wooden dowels. The electric starter is by far the easiest, though.
