Ford Expedition Spontaneously Catches on...

998 Ford Expedition spontaneously catches on fire while parked in apartment complex. It almost burns down a fence and telephone pole. The vehicle was sitting in place for over an hour before the fire occurred. We were sitting in the house when the alarm went off. The fire started on the driver side front. Looked like someone throw something at the tire to start the fire, but firefighters said they were pretty sure it was started in the engine compartment. Anybody have any ideas what it could have been? Go here for pictures.

My sister's boyfriend's '92 Explorer cought on fire in his driveway. Almost burned his house down. Fire Dept also thought his started under the hood.

He said he thought he heard something but wrote it off as the cat. He will never blame a noise on the cat again.

If the Altanator was recently replaced, the wiring harnes can cause the vehicle to burn. It builds restance in the harness until it gets so hot that it will flash burn. This will usually start on the driverside wheelwell where the main junction box is located or on the fuel rail where the main harness crosses over.

I was driving down a freeway on my way to a job interview in my Mazda RX7 (88). My console starts smoking and I go to pull over. My brakes don't respond so I ease up on the hand brake an end up fish tailing, jumping the curb, and coming to a rest on the shoulder. Thankfully I didn't hit anybody.

When I got out, the damn thing caught on fire. I have no idea what could've caused it, and neither did the fire fighters after they put it out. As people began slowing down by me (I wasn't blocking the road, and there was no traffic), I began waving and saluting them. Anyone who had a camera hid it away real quick.

Anyway, does anyone know what could've happened?

Oh, I got the job by the way.

Brake fluid can cause under bonnet fires. You can boil the brake fluid so it over flows, and if it gets on something hot, like the exhaust manifold, it may catch fire. apparently it takes a while to burn, so can be a delayed reaction

this happend to my dads pontiac 3 months after he baught it, something happend inbetween the fuel line, probably the pressure regulator, so my retard dad threw antifreeze which clearly had a flamable sighn on it on to the fire, i know it wasnt brake fluid cause the fire came from the left side of the car, after that the car was totaled and my dad ended up getting a new pontiac grand AM making it his third grand am. hmmm. whats ironic is i told him to buy one of those mini fire extinguishers from the store 5 mintes before he left.

Ford did do a recall on their cruise control units because they were to blame for these fires. For some stupid reason ford had the cruise control units always live to the battery even when their cars are off. So what would happen is that eventually the thin lining between the cruise control unit and the master cylinder would sometimes wear away. A live current into brake fluid would cause a fire a thus the car would burn down; sometimes taking peoples houses with them. This same thing happened to a friend of mines dad's truck. I believe this was only on ford trucks and explorers.
