Spaceship One

04/10/04 the private spacecraft SpaceShipOne reached an altitude of 69.6 miles claiming the $10M Ansari X-Prize. The craft was lofted to 14km by the White Knight aicraft, it then engaged its Hybrid rocket motor taking it into a 100km sub-orbit.

Amazing, I can't imagine what it would be like to look down and see Earth in that way. That must be an amazing feeling, I would give away a leg and a kidney just to be able to see that with my own eyes.

Damn that was awesome. 5/5, and a big thanks for one of those 1% of all great clips on Spiked.

This is one of those few things that makes me proud to be human. What an achievment. The people who made this short did it really well too. Even the ending was profoundly perfect.

Is all the spinning during the ascent nessesary? or was the poilet just showing off the aircraft / spacecraft's abilities?

I'm hoping it was for show, cause I would love to go up in one of these, but just watching the vid made me dizzy, let alone being In the thing...

It's necessary. Keeps him mostly facing upwards. Basically the same concept as to why a spinning top balances.

No, the spinning isn't necessary...it was, in fact, a problem that the pilot thought might jeopardize the mission. But because he was a skilled pilot, he maintained control *despite* the spin.
