Incarcerex: It's Time for a New Bottom L...

Tell Congress it is time for a new bottom line in U.S. drug policy, one that focuses on reducing the problems associated with both drugs *and* the war on drugs. Take action at http://www.drugpolicy.org.

5/5 That is hands down the best "infomercial" I have ever seen on Spiked.

So : What makes that fly in the USA? How do public officials get away with selling the police-heavy thing? Why does the public accept it at all? I am not Yanky bashing here, it's a serious question. I'm a mere 100 miles north of the US, and that kind of approach is a consistant no-go in these parts. It's like there's a subtle attitude difference, the people here just flat out reject that kind of authoritarian / police / punishment answer to problems.

It almost seems like we know that we can't afford to leave problems go until it's too late, where we end having to jail people (which just hurts a bunch of people, expensively). So we try to solve social problems before they get out of hand. Don't know, and it's a VERY complicated issue with many angles.

I had the 'aha!' sensation though, that the specific attitude that makes America's War On Drugs acceptable there, is the very same attitude that many non Americans define America by. I think it's percieved as: a belief that violence is an acceptable means to an end. And that's a very deplorable notion to many people. Many Americans included (perhaps not enough?).

Reminds me that future people will look back on our time from their camp fires, and regard this era with awe as the THE ERA OF CONFUSION. I sincerely hope we make it through.

Cheers.

^ I have to agree with you. I worked for a daycare here in America for a time and all the kids there (kids like 5 years or younger) try to solve every single problem with violence.

Its ridiculous that the culture of violence in America has permeated into such young children. It makes me sick.
