Brainwashing 101

Directed by Evan Coyne Maloney and executive-produced by Stuart Browning and Blaine Greenberg, is a 46-minute documentary ... all » illustrating the political environments on three United States university campuses. The film examines the possible use of institutional mechanisms such as speech codes to punish students who express political views that are unpopular within academia. Brainwashing 101 includes comments from Glenn Reynolds, the founder of Instapundit and Greg Lukianoff, then the Director of Legal and Public Advocacy for the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), a civil liberties organization that was founded to protect academic freedom of students and professors.

The film premiered at the American Film Renaissance festival in Dallas on September 11, 2004 and was later shown at the Liberty Film Festival in Los Angeles, which named Brainwashing 101 one of the Top 10 Documentaries of 2004.

I don't like the republican party but this is absurd. People shouldn't be judged on their political affiliation but on their character. Seems like just yesterday when it was the conservative people being intolerant to liberals. I guess what goes around, comes around.

This is SO LAME. How the hell can you be an economics major and NOT have to read marx? That's like being a biology major and not having to read darwin. Is anyone bellyaching about the economics majors having to read adam smith? Is that seen as "biased"? Of course not!

Why? It's only when you hear that other sides are being presented for the purpose of critical thinking that you hear this accusation that "censorship" is happening or that "We're only getting one side." Oh, really? Is this university cranking out a bunch of Marxist economics majors? You've got to be fucking kidding me. And I love in this "documentary" how we only hear one side...

The real problem in many of these cases? It really gets in conservatives' craw to find out that the more educated you are, the more liberal you are likely to be. This leaves 2 possible explanations:

1) Liberalism is the logical choice most likely to be chosen by the most educated people because it makes sense or

2) Liberalism is popular among the highly educated because there is a secret conspiracy in the universities to brainwash everyone. Therefore, all of the educated liberals are brainwashed products of this.

Which one is more likely? Which one is crazy?

Listen to all the crying: "People kick over our signs sometimes. It's like living in NAZI GERMANY!" Oh lord, give me a break. Anyway, the allegations in this documentary about the flyer and all that crap may or may not have happened as presented here, by the one side (although obviously they DID try to get the othe rside, who probably wouldn't comment for legal reasons- OF COURSE they're not going to admit fault on camera in a legal matter!), but come on- the idea that there is rampant censorship on campus is silly.

I mean listen to this crap- "There was an email about watching out for racist stalkers, but there wasn't one saying "watch out for people drawing swastikas on your door." Well I fucking wonder why- what's the relevant difference between someone stalking a student and someone making a little symbol on someone's door? Well shit, I guess the threat of violence isnt the relevant one- the relevant one must be whether they were liberal or conservative (even though the asian student's political persuasion wasnt mentioned)...

SUCH CRAP!

The obsession over race and even slightly questionable wording is, to be honest, pretty stupid. For people to insist that race is definitely a problem and that everyone is somewhat racist, well- whos the real racist here?

Ive been raised by good parents and have never even heard about race, religion, politics, etc.. until 14-15 when I started taking government classes. I am disgusted at how much people worship race and use it to advance their exremist views, whether on the right or left wing of the political spectrum.

Why can't we all just forget about meager differences such as skin color and just live life? Try asking that to a far-left liberal.

I'm a liberal but I don't think it's okay to draw swastikas on people's doors or send out public emails saying that you should shoot ragheads in the fucking face....

This kind of censorship is stupid, political ideas will live of die on their strengths or weaknesses, on the truth, not how well you can squash the opposition.

D! is right on the money. I remember watching a clip from Fox News a few weeks back about a republican bitching about how he "was forced to watch 'An Inconvenient Truth'" and how unfair it was. He was so outraged that he HAD to watch it for the grade that he didn't do it. In other words, he knew his stance before he saw what the university was trying to teach him. Why go to college if you aren't going to learn anything new? Unless you are a republican and only want a diploma.

Another thing: I don't know about most of you, but I have Larouche supporters on my campus. They are college (highschool?) dropouts that set up stands and hand out pamphlets about how college is brainwashing and how math is a conspiracy (I'm not joking). I talked to them as human being for the first few times but after a while I started ignore them completely. They are looney. Any rational person would say so. Maybe the Republicans at the university in this video were also a little too forceful so the administration wanted them to quite down a little and went a little overboard.

As for the narrator getting cops called: I sure as hell would have felt threated if I was that employee. No punches were thrown or threats made but it was tense. Civil my ass.

Yeah, that "inconvenient truth" thing is a great example of the retards whining because they don't get to stay sheltered. It's like the religicos bitching because their kids are taught about evolusion or sex education. "Waaaah! I had to watch a movie that I didn't agree with before I even saw it! Wahhhhh! I didn't get to stick exclusively with movies that confirm the way I like to see things! Waaaahhh, I'm being asked to challenge my own beliefs in (HIGH SCHOOL OR COLLEGE)!"

I teach at a university myself, and I regularly expose my students to controversial things to get them to think. Me personally, I vehemently disagree with many of the things I require them to read/watch (although I generally don't give my opinion). But nonetheless, I think it's important to THINK about issues, rather than have me just stand up there and tell them what to think. Obviously, many people on the right would prefer to be spoonfed rather than taught how to think, or to understand complexity and nuance. And what's more, they only want to be spoonfed what they already believe (whether that's justified or not). It's pretty sad.

Here's some advice- if you want to hear only one side, but still want to act like you are learning for diploma purposes, go to liberty university like this dude, or maybe to regents or some other far right wing religious school masquerading as an institution of higher learning. You won't have your precious beliefs challenged, and what's more, you can get a job in the W administration like monica goodling and other retards.

Welcome to the most useless video I've watched all day. Ok so this annoying whiny guy quotes some college professors about subjects that are probably not related to their fields of teaching and notes some strange college administrative decisions and what.. argues Americans shouldn't be educated? That a higher education and technical learning is somehow not as important as waving an American flag on college grounds? You'll find there are idiots with stupid opinions all over the world, not just on a college campus. If the local gas station pump yokel said the same things would this guy make a movie about it? I'm not sure if I care about my biology teachers opinion on politics, just teach me biology. What this fool concern himself with are those who's job it is to actually administer this country and support it's people then fail to do so when needed. But we elected them so... our bad.

arkivx,
do your homework, boy, before you embarrass yourself some more. the NY times printed an article quoting one geologist who took umbrage with SOME of al gore's conclusions, and made some mistakes even in doing that(ie criticizing things he didnt say).

http://www.dailyhowler.com/dh031407.shtml

so you should do more than swallow what youre fed by disreputable sources like glenn beck. i guess you're one of the people from this video, who whines and howls if he has to hear something he doesn't agree with, (especially facts), and who just repeats slogans and bumperstickers...

And by the way, look up the facts on this piece of shit here: http://www.freeexchangeoncampus.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogc
ategory&id=7&Itemid=34then again, the facts probably dont matter to you, do they?
