The movie is very fucking long. 3+ hours. Especially the directors cut that adds a 45 minute pointless and boring scene with some French people bitching about shit.

Loved the movie worth the 3 hours. Except the french part. But it has everything; Comedy, action, seriousness. I might watch it again this weekend.

Actually, the movie was purposely made to be very long and boring. It's to make the audience feel what it's kind of like in the jungle, the army, and to start going crazy - you know?

It's based on the awesome book "The Heart Of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad (one of my fav books) and it's about how society and law are just fragile scaffolding that hold us above the Darwinian grounds that truly describes human nature. Marlon Brando's character is regarded highly by society until he goes into the jungle, (Africa = represents motherland, our true identity, drums = heart beat, deep inner self) and realizes what we truly are - hence, "The Horror, The Horror"

The book is also dense because it is like the jungle the characters go through - thick, dense, hard to navigate through. The movie is like that - it drives us mad and makes us realize that the laws that hold up society are without substance.
