It would be bad to stand under a tree during a thunderstorm. Lightning is more likely to hit something tall than anything else. In fact, if you are near a bunch of trees and a lake/water, then you are safer in the water. It's a common misconception that water acts as an electrical conducter when it is actually impurities in the water that are conductive, not the water itself.

^^^ Not quite true there, Agent009.

Relatively speaking, water is a poor conductor but the impurities do not have crap to do with it with making it much more conductive. You're simply regurgitating an urban legend...any added conductivity is marginal at best. The deal with water, electricity, and human beings is that your skin is a much worse conductor than water is. Meaning if you get wet, or are standing in water, you have just increased the conductivity of your own self by many thousands of times. But, yeah, compared to copper, gold, and many other metals, water totally sucks as a conductor. Lighting that strikes a body of water does not travel very far through the water.

That said, it may be relatively safer to stand in a lake than next to a tall tree...but the fact of the matter is you're not very smart to do either. You are also relatively safe in a grove of trees of similar height.

Actually as far as water goes, and if you don't believe me try it, you can use a plastic tray of water with conductors in each end but not touching each other in series with a light bulb plugged into the wall. The water acts as the switch so to speak. The light will not light up, but as soon as you put salt in the water it will light up quickly. The water turns into an ionic solution that now will conduct very well. Different things will make the water different levels of conductivity, even dish soap. I'd post a vid of it to show you but I'm not that motivated.
He should have run up to the tree after and caught the cinders on camera.

Jeez I'm surprised the tree didn't catch because fire can get up to 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit but you are pretty brave to be filming this since the storm was right there
