Scientists May Have Cancer Cure, No one ...

DCA is an odourless, colourless, inexpensive, relatively non-toxic, small molecule. And researchers at the University of Alberta believe it may soon be used as an effective treatment for many forms of cancer. However, because the compound is not patented, you may never see it on the market as Drug companies can not profit.

It makes sense, If pharacutical company cannot make a profit, they will not make the drug. After it is proven though, they will all try to synthesize their own version with other processes to make the money off it. The law states that if a product is natural or occurs in nature you cannot patent it therefore like asprin, herbal tea and other natrual healing products, they have to place it on the open market at what ever price the market will hold.

I just read the MSDS on this substance and it sounds like some very toxic stuff. So aren't most chemotherapy agents though. I guess I can see why they want to have some trials before releasing it for use on humans.

If it's true we will see this on the market asap. Just because the major pharmaceutical companies can't make a large profit from it doesn't mean someone wont jump in and make a tiny profit from it.

The U of A is a pretty damn good place to do research, especially of the medical variety. There's another lab there that's working on a cure for diabetes, and they look to be damn close to finding one. Props to my alma mater!

Anyway, just because the drug can't be patented doesn't mean it can't be protected in some form. If noone will step up to the plate to manufacture it, supposing further trials are conclusive about it, then someone else, like perhaps the Canadian gov't, will bring its heavy hand into play and force it through the door.

This is a profound discovery, and a perfect example of why pharmaceutical companies should be under government control, and not in the hands of these greedy assholes. Even if a company were to merely break even distributing this treatment, is that not worth it?

I have family members dying of cancer, and it frustrates me to no end that medicine like this takes the back burner so the big drug companies can work on pills that make your dick hard and grow your hair back. All I can say is that I hope whoever is managing these immoral companies gets cancer themselves...

I'm not understanding how this is going to make it difficult for people to buy.

Chocolate doesn't have a patent. When is the last time you couldn't buy chocolate?

Just because one company cannot make all the profits doesn't mean that it's suddenly unavailable. I'd think it would make it even MORE available if everyone rushes to compete with it!

yes Flynn. Canadians Rule... Not only because of this topic .. but also because of the research and development into Diabetes..... they have made a HUGE leap in this as well.... They have also discovered a "cure" somewhat for this... but of course they are jumping through some of the same hoops that they have always been..
