Rescuers raced Saturday through the wreckage from a giant tornado that killed at least eight people and left little standing in this southwest Kansas town beyond the local pub.

The houses look like they've been made like ikeas flat pack wooden furniture. Why don't they build them a bit more sturdy out of something more durable, say stone... As for the people who just moved there, what did they expect moving into the heart of tornado valley?! Still a tragic loss of life.

unfortunately, because of the poor state of education there, they're gonna conduct human sacrifices to appease their god to not bring his wrath upon them... silly creationists.

i thought it was called tornado alley, not valley.

They are all Bush supporters anyways. Let them keep denying global warming exists and that it affects them.

Global warming has nothing to do with anything, assuming that it does exist.

However I think that it is time for a more appropiate design for buildings in this area (I live in Texas).

It seems to me that if we built homes partially underground, with reinforced concrete, which would incorporate a solid concrete arch for a roof, which could be covered with sod, then that would be most ideal for our weather.

Tornados are relatively small, so its not like they hit everything, but hail does hit everything and runs our homeowners insurance through the roof. If we had sod roofs over reinforced concrete arches, then there is no way that the tornados, hail or snow storms could hurt us.

Plus it would have the added benefit of being like a cave which would make the house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer, lowering energy costs.

Of course the houses that I have in mind would look kinda funny, but it seems like some architect more artistically inclined than myself, could do something cool with it.

Tornados....earthquakes.....it's just natures way of saying "Get this shit off me!"

edit: Anyway, why the hell would you move into a neighborhood named "tornado alley"?!?!

I don't think the Great Plains are nearly as disaster prone as much of the rest of the country.

West Coast has earthquakes and wild fires, East coast gets hit by hurricanes frequently, Rockies and Great Lakes get massive snow storms, Mississippi River Valley gets floods.

All we get is an occasional tornado, and they are always localized and effect very small areas.

I heard that this tornado in Kansas was an F-5, which is the most powerful. While it a tragedy for that little town, Dallas in also in Tornado Alley, and if (and when) an F-5 hits Dallas its going to be worse than 9/11 and New Orleans combined.

Even concrete and steel can't stand up to an F5 tornado or even probably an F3 or F4. An F5 tornado is like an atomic going off. So no matter how strong you build your house it probably won't stand up to the strongest tornado.

lets see how long it takes their goverment to fix it.

The price of a day of war in Iraq would probably cover it....

I could never understand why the place doesn't eventually get deserted. What fool would stay purely on the basis of "family roots". Hey cool tornado! Pack up your stuff, we're moving to Canada.
