It truly is amazing how small we are. Does anyone else ever wake up and the first thing that enters their mind is what the hell are they doing on a tiny dot in the middle of nowhere?

Contact written by Carl Sagan is a great film I recommend people watch it if they're into Astronomy / Search for extra terrestrial intelligence.

Miss you Carl! Even though you died before I was born.

Incredible dialog.

"Think of all those rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emporors so that in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot."

Wonderfully powerful words coming from someone so humble.

Weird because last time I checked Wikipedia it said his death was 1986 Particleman. Nah I'm not 11 years old :)

Why doesn't this have a 5?

"In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves."

Sad but true. If we don't do something, we won't be around for too much longer.

Oh sheesh, give the pessimism a break. You kids are too young to remember the nuclear armageddon that was going to kill us all in the 20th century, now it's global warming. It's all fucking bullshit. (Actually, nuclear armageddon was a real threat to existence, unlike global warming.) It's all the original fucking sin that we have to feel guilty for our collective sins and that we are going to be punished if we do not repent.

Hate to break it to you folks, but the world is fucking HUGE and humans are going to be "infesting" it for millions of years.

But, hey, either way, Carl Sagan rocks...even if he did give in to the collective pessimism once in a while.

This is from the Cosmos series part 13 Who speaks for the earth but the dialogue also comes from Pale Blue Dot a excellent book very good read.

EckJerome Its sad that you can take such profound and beautiful words and label them pessimistic it is suppose to be a humbling experience. This world is huge from out vantage point but that does not mean we should rape and pillage out planet at such alarming rates or treat one another with such hatred. The attitude you have is alarming to me as I'm sure it is to others and it is something that Mr. Sagan spent his life trying to change. You could not have misinterpreted what Carl Sagan was saying if you tried.

EckJerome. Nothing is more dismal than knowing that you have to live your life to what a book says a divine deity's moral standards are. Especially when not asking forgiveness from this tyrant for petty "immoral" deeds ensures your infinite torment in the afterlife. That to me is pessimism.
This video is humbling and motivating, not pessimistic.

Dillinger, stop being so quick of your tongue. no one said anything about any divine deity so chill. if you really believed that this video was humbling and motivating then I think you could have at least corrected him otherwise, by being just that...oh wait...people don't give a damn about each other...how sad indeed it is. but...[sigh], your comment just made this memorable for me, for I was humbled and motivated just as well...now where is the irony in that...simply, I really think there is none. perhaps you need to see that video again and hear about what he said about the saints, sinners, theologians, and doctorates. maybe then you can be "humbled" for more time than what it took you to write that comment down...sheesh. I guess my friends are right. I'm too soft for my age...
