Brazil Says Screw Oil

This is just to show that it is possible to run a country off ethanol rather that giving our money to some tin-pot dictator.

Intresting idea. Although the US uses far more energy than Brazil ever could. No renewable energy source is going to sustain our gluttonous energy consumption. We are just going to have to severely cut back on energy usage.

Brazil for not a extremely modern country" not in the past especially". have gone green hardcore, they recycle the methane that leechs from rubbish dumps, they have the technology to recycle tetra pack" that package that has paper/foil mixed.
good on them.
the major powers in this world have barely moved a finger in comparison to there efforts.

Hey Arm it's called technology people said in the 70's that there would never ever be a way to feed more than a few billion people 30 years later with new technologies and 9 billion people and there is an excess in food. So I say With technology all things are possible it seems you just hate America(Sarcasm). No renewable resource would be enough what an incredibly ignorant statement.

ethanol = alcohol
There are other engergy sources that could give even more energy than oil does.
I think in Finland they use a source , based on pinewood , and everyone who uses this source gets a small amount of money.
So I too believe that we can become independent of oil. But I'm not saying we are close to that.

I saw a show on the science chanel that was talking about how some scientists found a way to turn regular everyday garbage into oil in a little over an hour. My question is this: if we can do that, then way would we still be filling the earth with trash and using forign oil?

Also, I saw on FoxNews the other day a report about 'global climate change' and they were talking about Brazil and how "it's not that much more efficient to use ethanol." Not THAT much more efficient? If it's anymore effeicient at all we need to use it, every little bit counts. I want my Grandkids to not have someplace nice to live that isn't like a smoggy sweatbox.

Arm is a complete and total idiot and a hypocrite if he thinks ANYONE in this world can "severely" cut back on energy usage. (I bet he can't!!) Guess what, moron? Seven billion people living like cave people is NOT going to help the environment!!

The issue is how we produce the energy we need. Beleive it or not, we can have abundant energy AND a clean environment. The two are not mutually exclusive as the loony left contingency wants you to believe. Of course, they'll never accept the fact that their global warming policies are going to force the issue of nuclear power. It really is the cleanest, safest, and most efficient thing we've got going for producing electricity.

naruto-san, Finland only has five million people and a very low population density. Do you honestly think that what works for Finland will work for countries with 50 times that population? Fer chrissakes...Finland is essentially burning trees for energy!! That's fine as long as you've got enough trees, which Finland probably does, but it's not going to be fine for most places.

saltillo kid...why do you think oil is so popular for fuel? Because it IS the cheapest source, that's why! Ethanol produces less energy per gallon than gasoline and it also costs more.

Yeah, it would be great to have a cheaper source of energy, but let's not ignore that we already have a very cheap source. I think we could do very well by increasing the efficiency of existing technology. Hybrid cars are a perfect example of that effort.

That statement alone proves you are "smarter" than 90% of the people you run across.

EckJerome, ethanol is waaaay more cheaper to produce that oil, plus it is a renewable energy source, unlike oil. Besides, we can't rely on hybrids forever, they can run on electricity, true, but not as efficiently. also how do you think that electricity is produced? I agree that ethanol is not a perfect substitute, but it shows the most promising results
