Uh, that amount of jail time is still ridiculous for getting kissed. No matter the action, and no matter the views of the country, it was not her action that predicated the response.

I won't go about accusing Indian law, though. They have the right to set their own definitions of what is culturally acceptable, so long as they don't infringe on human rights.

There's still the shitty FACT that she was not:

A. kissing him.
B. in control of the situation.
C. even looking happy about it.

Was she supposed to have screamed, collapsed, hit him? Over a kiss? The fact that the BULLSHIT CONSERVATIVES there are going after her too ignores the double jeprody she was in. She would look a fool, and damage her (nationally) valuable carreer, if she over reacted.

If I recall, India is one of those fucked up places where women sometimes get killed because they got raped. Damage to the family reputation and all that UTTER NONSENSE.

The thing that struck me is that she seemed uncomfortable with the whole thing. Mr. Gere was extremely insensitive to her feelings and he should be begging her forgivness.

That being said, Indian law IS archaic. Women can and should stand up for themselves. This perhaps is not Miss Shetty's experience or want. I mean not only is Richard Gere a handsome man, he is powerful in the film industry. I'm sorry that she didn't tell him to stop herself, and if she had no desire for him to stop then perhaps the offended Men of her country should just take there ball and go home. It's a matter between two people, not a whole world.

Don't we have more important things to talk about?

India, traditionally, is an EXTREMELY liberal country. It wasn't until it was occupied and the morals of others was forced on it that it turned into some backwards moral cesspool. If I lived in India I'd be utterly outraged and emberassed over the people clinging to forced values, values that arn't even the same anymore for those that originally forced them.
