Video:Teen's Prosthetic Leg Stolen Again

Teen's Prosthetic Leg Stolen Again

For the second time in recent months, somebody broke into a 16-year-old girl’s home and stole her prosthetic leg — including one that had been donated following the first crime.

The thieves took a $12,000 cosmetic leg and a donated $16,000 leg that Melissa Huff uses to play softball, her mother, Lisa Huff, said. She also said a camera in the room was untouched.

“It’s insane. Who hates her that bad?” Lisa Huff said. “I went back to the girls’ room and the room was trashed. Mostly Melissa’s stuff.”

In the first theft, on Nov. 1, someone cut a hole in a window screen and also took video games and other items, authorities said. Her doctor and two real estate finance companies donated money for a new, shock-absorbent “sports leg” with a flexible foot.

On Tuesday, the thief pried open a screen window in the home, about 12 miles east of Los Angeles, said sheriff’s Sgt. Russell Sprague. He said authorities have no leads.

Melissa’s right leg was amputated two years ago after she was struck by a car. She resumed playing competitive softball after the accident and is now a high school sophomore.

“Now, she has nothing to walk with,” said her father, David Huff.

Broadband Law Re-Write

A senior Republican congressman on Wednesday said his committee hopes to propose a "comprehensive" overhaul of the nation's telecommunications laws - with an intensive focus on the explosion of the Internet.

"We really want to get a comprehensive telecom reform bill to the president's desk this year," Rep. Joe Barton, the Texas Republican who chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee.

Politicians in both the House and the Senate have been exploring ways to update the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which has been criticized for its failure to account for the rapid expansion of the Internet. On the Senate side, John Ensign of Nevada and Jim DeMint of South Carolina have each introduced measures that take a relatively laissez-faire approach to broadband.

Video:Ten Advantages of ADD

Ten Advantages of ADD

Pete Quily has created a top ten list of reasons why ADD can be useful in the ever changing world of technology.

1. The Ability to Hyperfocus.

Hours of full engagement and concentration in a task, IF you find it interesting. You can get into the zone and be totally immersed in what you’re doing while the outside world disappears. When I went on the net for the first time in 1993 at an Internet cafe I got on the machine at 8 pm and around 4 am decided it was time to go home.

2. Rapid Fire Mind.

Your brain processes information at hyperspeed. You can do things in 30 minutes on a computer that might take other people hours. Downside if you’re stuck with an old machine and not enough RAM you’ll be frustrated cause it can’t keep up with the speed of your brain.

3. Multitasking at Will.

Able to run 14 apps at a time and effortlessly switch between each without breaking a sweat. Able to do several projects at a time with ease.

4. High Energy Level.

You’re able to keep going on a project (if it’s interesting, ADDers are more into creative and entrepreneurial activities than clerical and repetitive ones). 14-hour days? No problem. Adrenaline is my fuel source:)

5. Highly Creative.

Able to think beyond the idea of a box. This comes naturally for ADDers, while others pay thousands of dollars to try and learn this. Since you take in more information than the average person, and you’re easily distractible, you’re more likely to view a problem from many different angles than vanilla people (non ADDers), and therefore come up with more possible solutions to a problem. Need an idea generator? Find an ADDer.

6. Quick Learner.

IF it’s something you’re interested in. ADD is mainly a condition of boredom; you have no trouble paying attention to something if it’s interesting.

Most people find it difficult to do boring or repetitive things but these can often totally shut an ADDer down. Your rapid fire brain + highly creative mind + the ability to hyperfocus equals fast absorption of new information quickly. Dr Ed Hallowell - who has ADD - said he stopped teaching Psychiatry at Harvard University because the non-ADDers brains were just to slow and they took so long to get it. He got tired of being continually frustrated waiting for them to catch up to the ADD students.

7. Stimulus Seeking Brain.

A perfect match for the wired world, an under stimulated brain and an over stimulated virtual environment. Being an info junkie can be a good thing. Well, not always:)

8. Constantly Scanning your Environment.

Allows you to notice more and find information and resource that others miss. Also allows you to see possible problems before they arise, and opportunities that others may not see because they have tunnel vision vs. multiplex vision. An ADDer invented the electronic ticket.

9. Great in a Crisis.

High energy intense situation? Lots of chaos and change? Sign me up; I thrive on stimulation, change and chaos. We can create order from chaos effortlessly. We can also create such an environment as well if needed.

10. Risk Taker.

Impulsivity means you’re more willing to take risks and have a bias for action, act now while the opportunity is hot instead of getting into analysis paralysis.

Many entrepreneurs have ADD i.e. Paul Orfalea who founded Kinko’s, JetBlue Founder and CEO David Neeleman who attributes his creativity to ADD. Both are Billionaires. Imagine how successful a high tech CEO would be if they didn’t take many risks.

This is not to say there are no disadvantages or real problems associated with ADDers in a high tech career, there most certainly are, and if you don’t learn to manage them, they can a great deal of trouble and grief to your life (and those around you), but that’s another article.

Video:The Death of the Internet

The Death of the Internet

Verizon, Comcast, Bell South and other communication giants are developing strategies that would track and store information on our every move in cyberspace in a vast data-collection and marketing system, the scope of which could rival the National Security Agency.

According to white papers now being circulated in the cable, telephone and telecommunications industries, those with the deepest pockets--corporations, special-interest groups and major advertisers--would get preferred treatment.

Content from these providers would have first priority on our computer and television screens, while information seen as undesirable, such as peer-to-peer communications, could be relegated to a slow lane or simply shut out.

Under the plans they are considering, all of us--from content providers to individual users--would pay more to surf online, stream videos or even send e-mail. Industry planners are mulling new subscription plans that would further limit the online experience, establishing "platinum," "gold" and "silver" levels of Internet access that would set limits on the number of downloads, media streams or even e-mail messages that could be sent or received.

A constructive thread for ideas

Video:Update Regarding Flash Video System

Update Regarding Flash Video System

We will be adding a manual download link for videos until we have the flash video system in full working order.

Sometime in the next week or so, we'll be tweaking the flash video codec so that video quality will be increased.

The other thing you need not worry about are the video player controls. You'll have all the same features and capabilities as before with the other players.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for your patience while we refine our flash video system.

More Important SpikedHumor Update

This update is for people who never read the Important SpikedHumor Update.
People have been jumping to conclusions all over the place, so let me clear a few things up.

With regards to the flash video system...

You must have Flash Player 8 installed in order for SpikedHumor videos to work for you.

Keep in mind that there are certain operating systems that don't work with Flash Player 8.
We may end up having to make SpikedHumor's Flash Player with version 7 if we can't tackle the conflict.

To check what verison of flash player you have, click here.

We are still unsure if we will offer a way to manually download videos, so please stop asking if we are going to do so. The most likely scenario would be for us to implement profiles for each user to store links.

Feel free to leave your feedback, specifically at the SpikedHumor Feedback Forum.

Here at SpikedHumor, we're always looking for ways to improve our site and provide you with the best entertainment on the internet. Therefore, we have implemented the flash video system to make video playback cleaner, faster and less buggy. The current flash player will be upgraded over the next few weeks to one that is unique to SpikedHumor which will offer more goodies and user-friendliness.

Check out this video for an example of the current, open source flash player.

Central to our content has always been the public upload system, which we are pleased to announce will be improved, mostly in regards of its user-friendliness; we're aware that some users find it difficult to use. As part of this, we are also introducing some new rules for the system. We expect all articles submitted using the public upload system to be of high quality, both in content and in grammar/formatting.

So, when uploading content, please be aware of the following simple rules:

- Before submitting an article, search the site to make sure that it hasn't already been submitted.
Duplicates are a burden.

- Capitalize every word in the article title.

- When writing descriptions, remember to use proper spelling, punctuation and grammar in general.

- Descriptions should be clear and concise, while giving as much information as possible.
SpikedHumor's search feature depends on this.

- DO NOT repeatedly post the same article.
If you've discovered that one of your articles was deleted, it was removed for a reason. Anybody who insists on resubmitting identical articles WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE THEIR ACCOUNT REMOVED.

As well as those basic rules, anyone who repeatedly submits poor quality articles may be penalised by having points deducted from their XP. It may seem harsh, but take it as an indication of how important quality content is.

As well as these new updates, we want to hear what you think of the way the site works. For example, do you want to see more of one thing and less of another? Have your say and let us know what we can do to make SpikedHumor better.

The best way to air your opinions is through the Feedback board on the SpikedHumor Forums. Alternatively, you can join the Spiked IRC channel at irc.criten.net in the #spikedhumor channel and talk directly to an admin. And of course, the comments section below can also be put to use.

It's your site, so why not help make it better?

SpikedHumor Recruiting Editors

Tired of seeing badly written / formatted articles? Us too!

You, the author, can do your part by using accurate / relevant titles in your articles when submitting content, no matter what type. Also remember to ensure that your descriptions are relevant, thorough and detailed.

Choose the correct category for your article. An example of where a lot of authors wrongly categorize videos is when they categorize commercials as, say, funny videos. And don't forget to check off relevant age rating(s).

If you're having trouble creating 175x150 thumbnails for videos, or have any other questions, problems or concerns, check out our forums for support.

And for those of you who won't abide by these fair guidelines which make viewers' experience more enjoyable, you're the reason why we're in need of more volunteer editors dedicated to frequenting the site to take care of certain duties that will be decided on in an interview.

If, for example, you're obsessive compulsive like myself in which everything must be perfect and have lots of time on your hands to dedicate to Spiked, contact me via the forums to find out how you can contribute.

I must stress not to apply unless your editing skills are excellent. Only applicants willing to offer several hours per week will be considered. To those who qualify and are interested, thanks for the support - we look forward to discussing your potential on a web site averaging about a million page-views per day.
