Video:Zoo Upsets Ginger Kids

zoo upsets ginger kids

an australian zoo has dropped an ad campaign offering free visits to people with ginger hair to highlight the plight of orang-utans.

adelaide zoo ran advertisements offering "free zoo entry for all rangas" during the school holidays, reports the advertiser.

"ranga" - an abbreviation of orang-utan - is a common nickname in australia for redheads.

"we seem to be getting quite a bit of a negative reaction to that request," said zoos sa's director of conservation programs kevin evans.

"people are possibly more sensitive about it than we thought," he said.

"we have a campaign over the school holidays because of orang-utans being an endangered species - and so are human redheads," mr evans said.

"because of the way people move around these days, the genes that carry redheads are breeding out to brunettes and blondes."

the zoo has dropped the ads but will continue to offer free entry to people with red hair for the next two weeks.

zoo staff will not seek proof that patrons are natural redheads: "we're not actually checking tops and tails, or anything like that," mr evans said.

Video:Zoo Serves Poisoned Sno-Cones

zoo serves poisoned sno-cones

the sedgwick county zoo in wichita, kan., will no longer be selling blue sno-cones after a dangerous mix-up at the refreshment stand, fox4kc reported.

four people became sick thursday when a zoo employee accidentally poured a degreasing agent into the sno-cone machine instead of the flavored syrup.

the two bottles are the same size, shape and color and were accidentally placed next to each other.

a zoo spokeswoman said the employee didn't read the labels and apologized to families who got sick.

none of the victims ingested enough of the chemical for it to be dangerous.

Video:Woman Sues Zoo Over Splashing Dolphins

woman sues zoo over splashing dolphins

chicago (reuters) - a woman is suing a chicago-area zoo for a 2008 fall near a dolphin exhibit, accusing zookeepers of encouraging the mammals to splash water and then failing to protect spectators from wet surfaces, local media reported on thursday.

in her suit filed earlier this week, allecyn edwards said she was injured while walking near an exhibit at brookfield zoo, where a group of atlantic bottlenose dolphins were performing, media said.

officials "recklessly and willfully trained and encouraged the dolphins to throw water at the spectators in the stands, making the floor wet and slippery," but failed to post warning signs or lay down protective mats or strips, the suit said, according to the reports.

edwards is demanding more than $50,000 for lost wages, medical expenses and emotional trauma from the chicago zoological society and the forest preserve district of cook county, which operate the zoo in chicago's southwest suburbs.

Video:Zoo Offers Visitors Chance To Eat The Animals They See

zoo offers visitors chance to eat the animals they see

vip guests at the grand opening of the night safari zoo in northern thailand will not only get to see exotic animals - they'll get to taste them.

the chiang mai night safari zoo will have its official opening on new year's day, and the "exotic buffet" marking the event will include tiger, lion, elephant and giraffe, said plodprasop suraswadi, the director of the zoo project.

"the vip guest who pay 4,500 baht ($110) for the buffet will have the privilege of tasting an exotic menu, ranging from dog meat from (thailand's sakhon nakhon province) to lion meat from africa," plodprasop told reporters.

critics have lambasted the idea, saying that it will encourage wildlife trafficking in a country and region already notorious for smuggling tiger parts, bear claws and endangered species for chinese delicacies, traditional medicines and pets.

"serving rare animals on the table confirms that thailand is ignoring policies for wildlife preservation," said wildlife fund thailand secretary suraphol duangkae.

"thailand's image is already bad for trading animals and being a transit and laundering point (for smugglers)," suraphol said. "the zoo will make only the image worse by serving rare animals."

kenya said last week it will give thailand 175 wild animals - including african buffalo, various species of antelope, zebra and giraffe - as a gift to strengthen relations, but conservationists voiced concern that thailand does not have a good track record of wildlife management and conservation.

the project, based on singapore's night safari zoo, will have 2,000 animals of about 100 different species.

Video:Reindeer-Dung Jewelry Sells At Ill. Zoo

reindeer-dung jewelry sells at ill. zoo

bloomington, ill. – sparkly reindeer-dung necklaces are going on sale at an illinois zoo that hopes to attract the same holiday shoppers who swept up its dung christmas ornaments last year.

the limited-edition magical reindeer gem necklaces will debut friday at the miller park zoo in bloomington.

the $15 pendant necklaces contain dried, sterilized reindeer droppings — sprayed with glitter — on a beaded chain. they'll be available at the zoo's gift shop, or by mail for $20.

the ornaments are back, and 450 have already sold this season. about 1,500 are still available for $7.50, or $10 by mail.

miller park zoological society spokeswoman susie ohley admits it's a bit silly but estimates the zoo could make $16,500. the zoo lost $200,000 under city budget cuts this year.
