monkeys and apes in budapest's zoo drink their way through 55 litres of red wine each year, albeit in small quantities each day, to help boost their red blood cells, the zoo said on monday.
budapest zoo spokesman zoltan hanga said it was the 11 anthropoid apes who drank most of the wine in 2005.
"obviously, they do not have it all at once and get drunk, but they get it in small amounts mixed in their tea," mr hanga said.
"and it's not eger bulls blood or some expensive wine that they are getting but simple table wine, as it's mainly good for their blood cells."
bulls blood from the town of eger in north-east hungary, became one of eastern europe's best-known wines under communism.

a wine glut has driven prices lower than bottled water as the industry faces an unprecedented meltdown and a fire-sale of unprofitable vineyards. the price collapse and overplanting has forced australia's biggest winemaker, foster's, owner of prestigious labels such as lindemans and penfolds, to sell 31 vineyards across the country, including 16 in south australia and nine in new south wales. major wine retailer dan murphy's is currently selling cleanskins for $1.99 a bottle - cheaper than some bottled water - due to the oversupply crisis that has led to some vineyard owners leaving grapes to wither on the vine. "we've seen growers who didn't bother picking their grapes this year," said wine industry critic and judge stuart gregor. "there is a huge oversupply and we have more grapes than we are selling, and prices are being pushed down." a dan murphy's spokeswoman said the company had offered $1.99 bottles for short periods several times due to the supply glut. a crisis meeting by winemakers concluded that 20 per cent of vines needed to be phased out in the next three years to re-address the imbalance, said winemakers federation of australia director mitchell taylor. about 1.5 million tonnes of grapes are required for the annual vintage, but this year about 1.7 million were harvested while the previous 12 months the harvest was about 1.8 million tonnes, wfa figures show. strong export sales led to over-optimistic outlooks for australia's wine industry and a doubling of vine-producing areas over the past decade. but forecasts of more than $3 billion in export sales by next year have been dashed by overseas competition, an excess of cheaper wines and the global financial crisis. apart from foster's, constellation wines australia, which owns such labels as houghton and banrock station, had two wineries and 16 vineyards left for sale after placing 26 properties on the market last august. the fire-sale of vineyards and plummeting prices is the reality check the industry had to have, according to leading wine commentator jeremy oliver. he estimated 20 per cent of land under vine in australia was not needed. "some vineyards are just being left. people are walking away, which is leading to concern that disease could take over and spread into other properties," he said. source
article submitted by master911. a tasmanian winery has launched a new range of wines with labels featuring terrorist leader osama bin laden. another label reproduces an image that surfaced from the torture scandal at abu ghraib prison in iraq, of a hooded prisoner with electric wires attached to his hands. the wines are being produced by the moorilla winery, owned by millionaire gambler david walsh, in hobart's northern suburbs, the mercury reports. the images are taken from political graffiti from the streets of hobart and melbourne. the stencil image of bin laden goes next to a graffiti message reading "all you need is love". beneath the torture image are the words "iraqi liberation". moorilla has previously produced an erotic sex-and-death themed "muse" wine series. moorilla winemaker conor van der reest said the temporary and contemporary nature of street art suited the drink-now ethos of the new "praxis" wines. "it's not a question of us trying to confront people," mr van der reest said. "it's more a chronicling of stuff that's current, either in art or world events." source
wellington, new zealand - two women were hospitalized after a new zealand cafe mistakenly served dishwashing liquid as mulled wine, a newspaper reported tuesday. chico's restaurant ltd. in the mountain resort of queenstown on south island pleaded guilty to a charge of selling food containing extraneous matter — the chemical sodium hydroxide — that caused injury, the southland times newspaper said. prosecutor sarah mckenzie told queenstown district court that the two women were taken to a hospital after drinking the liquid last july, the newspaper reported. customer sarah ferguson had ordered a glass of "mountain thunder" mulled wine from queenstown's old man rock cafe, owned by chico's restaurant ltd. she spat out the liquid when she experienced a burning sensation on her lips and mouth. cafe worker bethany sim offered to test the drink and suffered a similar reaction. "a check by cafe management indicated that a mulled wine container had unfortunately been filled with dishwashing detergent," mckenzie told the court. an investigation showed the two liquids had been mixed up after 5.2 gallons of dishwashing liquid was delivered in a container formerly used to hold "mountain thunder" mulled wine. the court heard sim suffered burns and possible scaring of her throat and esophagus from the chemical mix. under new zealand's no-fault accident law, victims do not sue for damages. instead, treatment costs and income loss are met by the nation's accident compensation scheme. the company will be sentenced next month and faces a possible fine. source
