a boone high school teacher faces charges in connection with injuring a student with a sword.
students and the teacher said a confrontation happened tuesday night when a group came by his house to engage in a traditional high school prank -- putting toilet paper on his property.
"we were all tping and stuff and a bunch of kids went to his house. and he came from a neighbor's yard with a sword and was chasing after everybody and hit a kid's hand," said matt phannes, a student.
police were then called to the scene. authorities said trenton kerger was arrested and charged with assault causing injury.
bill skare, the boone police chief, said the sword has been taken as evidence.
it's homecoming week at boone high school, a time when everyone is supposed to be celebrating. but now a lot of the talk is about the alleged sword incident.
"he's a drama teacher so he has all that kind of thing. so it wasn't on purpose or anything," phannes said.
kerger said about 50 students were outside his house and wouldn't leave when he asked them, newschannel 8 reported. kerger told newschannel he brought out the sword to persuade them to leave.
"we are conducting our own investigation within the school and he's currently on paid leave until further notice," said theron schutte, boone's superintendent.
kerger also told newschannel 8 that he has had vandalism at his home in the past during homecoming week.
the student who was hurt was not seriously injured.

calgary, alberta - it may look like gorilla warfare, but officials say the knife-wielding primate photographed by visitors to the calgary zoo had no violent intent. the photos show a gorilla, named barika, clutching the blade and pointing it at another gorilla in her cage. the knife was accidentally left behind by a keeper who entered the enclosure to prepare food, cathy gaviller, the zoo's director of conservation, education and research said wednesday. within minutes of picking up the blade, barika placed it on a chair and all of the gorillas were called out of the enclosure, gaviller said. while gorillas will use crude tools in captivity, they have no concept of using weapons and would never have thought to be violent with the knife, gaviller said. source
a man who was apparently was upset after finding a soda can in his room allegedly used a sword to cut two of his roommates. michael angel zamago was jailed on friday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon related to family violence. bail was $25,000. a police report indicates zamago was upset to find a soda can in his room, thinking someone entered without permission. zamago allegedly used the sword to poke holes in a closed door to a room where the pair fled. one roommate has a cut under his right arm pit. the other suffered a cut in the shoulder area. a jailer who declined to provide his name said there was no record of an attorney for zamago. source
