congress ponders videogame warning labels

house of representatives member joe baca (d-california) has introduced legislation that would attach a warning label to games rated teen and higher.

baca says that the video game health labeling act of 2009 is being introduced in response to the video game industry's alleged failure "to inform [consumers] of the potentially damaging content that is often found in their products."

the label would be similar to those already found on alcohol and tobacco products, reading: "warning: excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior."

in a press release concerning the bill, baca cites a number of recent scientific studies as evidence of a neurological link between video games and aggression, and believes that affixing a warning label will "work to stop the growing influence of violent media on america's children and youth."

while it might seem a bit redundant to slap a warning label onto a box that already features a content rating, baca's bill strikes me as a rather clever approach to attaching the stigma of moral corruption to video games. previous bills went too far: by attempting to ban the sale of video games to minors, and essentially lumping video games in the same category as pornography, lawmakers attempted to skirt the constitution.

a warning label wouldn't get halo any closer to being banned, but would likely cause a great deal of alarm to those parents that do read the box before purchasing a game. i'm all for educating the uninformed about potentially harmful substances, provided there's concrete evidence, but a vaguely worded warning label does little more than sensationalize research results.

uk smokers to face picture warnings

images highlighting the dangers of smoking will be printed on all tobacco products sold in the uk by the end of 2009, under regulations being set out.

manufacturers will have to start complying from october next year.

after a public consultation 15 images, including ones of diseased lungs, have been chosen to accompany text warnings about lung cancer and heart disease.

anti-smoking campaigners welcomed the move but smokers' lobby group forest said they were being "victimised".

health secretary alan johnson told bbc news there was evidence from other countries that the new images would help people quit.

"we do think it will help the number of people, who want to give up to smoking - the vast majority of smokers want to give up - and this will give them an extra push," he said.

the graphic adverts come just over a month before the minimum age for buying tobacco in england and wales increases from 16 to 18, bringing it in line with alcohol.

apple iphone warning proves true

an apple software update is disabling iphones that have been unlocked by owners who wanted to choose which mobile network to use.

earlier this week apple said a planned update would leave the device "permanently inoperable".

thousands of iphone owners hacked their expensive gadget in order to unlock it for use with other mobile carriers and to run a host of unsupported programs.

there are also reports of the update causing issues with unaltered iphones.

on monday apple issued a statement in which it said many of the unauthorised iphone unlocking programs caused "irreparable damage" to the device's software.

the company said this would "likely result in the modified iphone becoming permanently inoperable when a future apple-supplied iphone software update is installed".

that warning has now proved correct as many owners are reporting their phones no longer work following installation of the update.

apple requires iphone owners to take out a lengthy contract with at&t in the united states but there are a number of programs on the net that unlock the device for use with other networks.

some owners are reporting on technology blogs and apple's own forums that the update is deleting contacts information, as well as photos and music, on iphones that have not been modified in any way.

london (afp) - a british pensioner has been ordered out of his local social club for breaking wind too loudly, which "disgusted" fellow members, media reports said wednesday.

maurice fox, 77, received a letter from kirkham street sports and social club in paignton, south-west england, about his overly-audible flatulence, asking him to go outside when necessary.

"it's only a little bit of wind -- it doesn't really hurt anyone. i sit by the door anyway and try to get out when i can. but sometimes it takes me by surprise and just pops out," he said, quoted by the guardian daily.

"i think someone has complained about the noise. i am a loud farter, but there is no smell," he added, noted that "there is no smell at all since i gave up the cider and started on the bass (a type of beer)."

the letter from the club committee confirmed that others had been disturbed.

"after several complaints regarding your continual breaking of wind (farting) while in the club, would you please consider that your actions are considered disgusting to fellow members and visitors," it said.

"you sit close to the front door, so would you please go outside when required. so please take heed of this request," it added.

fox -- who said he gets no complaints at another nearby club he attends two days a week -- voiced surprise that he had received no oral warning before the written complaint.

but he admitted they had a point. "i do not think it is unreasonable, you get ladies in there," he said.

"the ladies find it a bit rude but the men have a chuckle. my wife died seven years ago and i live on my own so i might have lost a few social graces. but i was surprised to get the letter from the committee."

king of nepal warned by the west

western ambassadors have warned the king of nepal that if he does not bow to massive protest rallies being held across the country and restore democracy, he risks losing his throne.

three more protestors died yesterday as a general strike called by the opposition entered its fourteenth day. opposition parties are planning to bring hundreds of thousands of people onto the streets of kathmandu today in the biggest demonstration yet.

the us ambassador to nepal, james moriarty, was summoned to the palace yesterday after he said publicly in an interview that if king gyanendra does not back down, he may end up having to flee his country clinging to a helicopter.

but he was only saying in public what a string of leading ambassadors are believed to have told the king in private: that he must make a deal with the opposition parties if he is to hold on to his throne.

in a sign king gyanendra may want to strike some sort of deal with the opposition to end the protests, he yesterday released the two highest-profile political prisoners in nepal, senior figures from the two biggest opposition parties: madhav kumar nepal of the communist party (uml) and ram chandra poudel of the nepali congress party.

but the party leaders say they will not make any deal in return for token measures from the king and are insisting that he restores democracy. in an effort to stop the massive rally planned for today in kathmandu, the royal government last night announced a curfew.

as the crisis deepend, nepal's giant neighbour india sent a special envoy to kathmandu yesterday for urgent talks with king gyanendra. he is expected to tell the king starkly that delhi will not continue to back him if he does not make some sort of deal and continues to try to suppress the protests by force. almost all of nepal's trade depends on the border with india.

gyanendra ended democracy in nepal when he sacked the entire government and seized back the absolute powers of a mediaeval king. at the time he said it was necessary to defeat the maoists guerrillas who control large parts of the country and have fought a ten-year civil war.
