"i am the walrus" is a 1967 beatles song, written by john lennon and credited to lennon-mccartney. lennon later claimed he wrote the first two lines on separate acid trips. the song was used in their 1967 television film and album magical mystery tour, and was released as the b-side to the #1 hit "hello, goodbye". it is one of the beatles' most striking and effective experimental songs from the psychedelic period, and is noted as being one of the most adventurous examples of lennon's wordplay. lennon composed the song by combining three separate songs he had been working on. additionally, when he learned that a teacher at his old primary school was having his students analyze beatles' lyrics, he added on a verse of specifically nonsensical words designed to confuse listeners. the walrus within the song is a reference to the walrus from lewis carroll's the walrus and the carpenter. lennon later expressed dismay at learning that the walrus was the villain within the poem.

in 1969, a 14-year-old beatle fanatic named jerry levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into john lennon`s hotel room in toronto and convinced john to do an interview about peace. 38 years later, jerry has produced a film about it. using the original interview recording as the soundtrack, director josh raskin has woven a visual narrative which tenderly romances lennon`s every word in a cascading flood of multipronged animation. raskin marries the terrifyingly genius pen work of james braithwaite with masterful digital illustration by alex kurina, resulting in a spell-binding vessel for lennon`s boundless wit, and timeless message.
