"urine is a mess because urine is full of solids," mr lewis said. those solids clog the venting system for dumping urine which meant keeping the waste disposal system clear is "really a challenge," he added. nasa has a long-standing tradition of collecting samples from its workers to help design better space toilets because "you can't make fake urine," mr lewis said. the memo seeking daily contributions from july 21 to july 31, contains detailed instructions for participants, but was not meant to go public. it requests donors do not drink too much to encourage urination, warning that "you are not encouraged to over-hydrate as this could dilute the urine we collect". "unlike in the doctor's office, you do not need to worry about starting collection midstream," the memo states. "our testing will be much more accurate if you collect as much of the entire urination as possible including the beginning." it also calls for urine to be fresh, no more than an hour old. "we suggest that morning urine be collected at home, but not night-time urine," the memo states. source

a prize-winning author of children's books has revealed an unsavory secret ingredient used to craft her latest work – rats' urine. emily gravett has just won the most coveted award for children's illustration with little mouse's big book of fears. the book explores the phobias of a mouse who is afraid of everything. gravett has dedicated the work to her two pet rats on account of the help they gave her in producing the book's distinctive look. she wanted to make the pages look as if they had been nibbled by a nervous, hungry mouse. her two pets, button and mr moo – sadly now dead – were happy to nibble away at pieces of paper. "they are easy to persuade," she told the guardian. "you just have to bribe them with food." "they like anything with fat," she added. florida- a gainesville man has been accused of stealing a small refrigerator from a probation office to destroy one of his own urine samples. devin anthony perry was arrested and charged with arson, destroying evidence, burglary and larceny. the charges are connected with a break-in at the department of corrections probation and parole office at 7020 nw 11th place between 2 a.m and 5 a.m. sunday. it is the same office that perry reported to on friday to provide a urine sample that tested positive for drug use, according to alachua county sheriff's office spokesman art forgey. based on evidence at the scene, statements by perry and information from probation officers, sheriff's office investigators pieced together the following series of events. after realizing that his sample tested positive, perry went to the office, shot out a window to get inside and removed the locked refrigerator used to store samples. after leaving the office, perry picked up shards of window glass that had his blood on it and set the shrubbery beneath the window on fire. probation officers who arrived at the office shortly before dawn saw the smoldering shrubs and called deputies, and then provided investigators with a list of those who may have had a reason to want a stored sample destroyed. investigators began tracking down the potential suspects. at perry's home the investigators looked into a trash bin and found shards of glass with blood on them wrapped inside clothing believed to have been perry's. the refrigerator had not been found by monday morning. state records show perry was sentenced to probation until 2018 for multiple drug convictions, including possession and sale of marijuana and cocaine. source how cute is that mini-fridge case mod!
willmar, minn. -- a 50-year-old man who told authorities he was fed up with teens toilet-papering his house decided to defend his property - with a squirt gun filled with fox urine. now, scott wagar is in trouble with the law. wagar pleaded not guilty on wednesday in kandiyohi county district court to misdemeanor assault and other charges. he was released on personal recognizance. according to police, wagar was on his property sept. 16 when he used night vision goggles to see 15-20 people running toward his place. he told police that he told them to leave, swore at them and sprayed them with the fox urine. he also allegedly struggled with one of the teens. a phone message left at a home listing for a scott wagar was not immediately returned to the associated press. source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.

houston - at the international space station, it was one small sip for man and a giant gulp of recycled urine for mankind. astronauts aboard the space station celebrated a space first on wednesday by drinking water that had been recycled from their urine, sweat and water that condenses from exhaled air. they said "cheers," clicked drinking bags and toasted nasa workers on the ground who were sipping their own version of recycled drinking water. "the taste is great," american astronaut michael barratt said. then as russian gennady padalka tried to catch little bubbles of the clear water floating in front of him, barratt called the taste "worth chasing." he said the water came with labels that said: "drink this when real water is over 200 miles away." the urine recycling system is needed for astronaut outposts on the moon and mars. it also will save nasa money because it won't have to ship up as much water to the station by space shuttle or cargo rockets. it's also crucial as the space station is about to expand from three people living on board to six. the recycling system had been brought up to the space station last november by space shuttle endeavour, but it couldn't be used until samples were tested back on earth and a stuck valve was fixed on monday. so when it came time to actually drink up, nasa made a big deal of it. the three-man crew stood holding their drinks and congratulated engineers in two nasa centers that worked on the system. "this is something that had been the stuff of science fiction," barratt said before taking a sip. nasa deputy space shuttle manager leroy cain called it "a huge milestone." on the russian side of the space station, moisture in the air — not urine — is turned into drinking water. the new system takes the combined urine of the crew from the toilet, moves it to a big tank, where the water is boiled off, and the vapor collected. the rest of contaminants — the yucky brine in the urine — is thrown away, said marybeth edeen, the space station's national lab manager who was in charge of the system. the water vapor is mixed with water from air condensation, then it goes through filters, much like those put on home taps, edeen said. when six crew members are aboard it can make about six gallons from urine in about six hours, edeen said. some people may find the idea of drinking recycled urine distasteful, but it is also done on earth, but with a lot longer time between urine and tap, edeen said. in space, it takes about a week, she said. source
airport security staff ordered a retired policeman to drink his own urine sample to prove it was safe. yu fahai, 58, was going through security at pudong international airport in shanghai, when he was challenged over a bottle of liquid in his pocket. yu, who received a kidney transplant several years ago, has to regularly test his urine for infection, reports news morning. does your pepsi lack pep? is your coke not the real thing? india's hindu nationalist movement apparently has the answer: a new soft drink made from cow urine. the bovine brew is in the final stages of development by the cow protection department of the rashtriya swayamsevak sangh (rss), india's biggest and oldest hindu nationalist group, according to the man who makes it. om prakash, the head of the department, said the drink – called "gau jal", or "cow water" – in sanskrit was undergoing laboratory tests and would be launched "very soon, maybe by the end of this year". "don't worry, it won't smell like urine and will be tasty too," he told the times from his headquarters in hardwar, one of four holy cities on the river ganges. "its usp will be that it's going to be very healthy. it won't be like carbonated drinks and would be devoid of any toxins." the drink is the latest attempt by the rss – which was founded in 1925 and now claims eight million members – to cleanse india of foreign influence and promote its ideology of hindutva, or hindu-ness. hindus revere cows and slaughtering them is illegal in most of india. cow dung is traditionally used as a fuel and disinfectant in villages, while cow urine and dung are often consumed in rituals to "purify" those on the bottom rungs of the hindu caste system. in 2001, the rss and its offshoots – which include the opposition bharatiya janata party – began promoting cow urine as a cure for ailments ranging from liver disease to obesity and even cancer. the movement has often been accused of using more violent methods, such as killing 67 christians in the eastern state of orissa last year, and assaulting women in a pub in mangalore last month. it also has a history of targeting foreign business in india, as in 1994, when it organised a nationwide boycott of multinational consumer goods, including pepsi and coca cola. the cola brands are popular in india, now one of their biggest markets, but have struggled in recent years to shake off allegations, which they deny, that they contain dangerous levels of pesticide. mr prakash said his drink, by contrast, was made mainly of cow urine, mixed with a few medicinal and ayurvedic herbs. he said it would be "cheap", but declined to give further details about its price or ingredients until it was officially launched. he insisted, however, that it would be able to compete with the american cola brands, even with their enormous advertising budgets. white plains, n.y. - a man who was apparently worried about a random drug test asked an 11-year-old boy at a mall for a urine sample. white plains police say marcos delacruz, 42, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. he was arrested several hours after the incident in the men's room at the mall on wednesday. deputy public safety commissioner daniel jackson said delacruz took the sample to his appointment with his probation officer. the 11-year-old boy told his mother that a man in the men's room had asked him to urinate in a bottle. the mom called police and the boy described the man. jackson said the officers contacted local probation, parole and court offices and found delacruz who had an appointment at the westchester county probation department. source
