the mighty microsoft marketing machine is back in action this week, unveiling the device behind the company’s much-hyped and highly secretive “origami project” at a trade show in germany.
the ultramobile pc, as it was recently called by mika krammer, a marketing director for microsoft's windows mobile unit, will be the ultimate in handheld technology. it will run on windows xp and have a seven and a half inch touch-sensitive screen.
weighing in at less than two and a half pounds and with a thickness of about an inch, it will be roughly the size of a large pocketbook. its capabilities are said to be that of a laptop or pc. later versions will run on the new windows vista operating system and it will rely heavily on expanding wifi technology. hitting stores sometime this spring, it is sure to be a huge seller.
or will it? with the 360 fiasco fresh in the minds of the consumer populace and the shelves at the stores still mysteriously lacking the very same self-proclaimed god of all gaming systems, how can we be sure this won’t be more of the same? bill gates has laughed at us before, and like jilted lovers we approach anything he does nowadays with extreme caution. we are not without good reason.
it goes without saying that this machine has been and will continue to be severely over-hyped. however, as a society we have the unfortunate habit of expecting too much. when taken away from the overly critical aspect of the market this new device will most likely be a very cool little piece of technology.
you will hear a lot about this newest creation in the next few months. until spring, however, and john and jane doe are allowed to get their hands on these little gems of the future, it will all be pure speculation.
a japanese vehicle manufacturer unveiled the prototype of a new electric motorbike carrying a hybrid magnetic motor, which can run almost noiselessly up to 180 kilometres (112 miles) on one charge. tokyo-based axle corporation says that the battery of the next-generation electric vehicle motorbike can be charged at home, in the same way as a cellular phone. it takes a little over 6 hours to fully charge the battery, and the vehicle's maximum speed is capable of reaching 150 kilometres per hour (93 miles per hour). the company says the futuristic motorbike enjoys high energy efficiency thanks to a state-of-the-art magnetic motor which is a hybrid between a electromagnet and a permanent magnet. the new motor, called sumo, short for "super motor," is housed inside the bike's rear wheel. the manufacture says the new motor is seven-times more cost efficient than gas-powered scooters. daisuke ito, a professional racer who test rode the ev-x7 prototype, said it could potentially replace machines we now see in motor races. "i just feel that in the near future, we'll be seeing these kinds of electric motorbikes running all around town. and when that happens, conventional vehicles could disappear from motor racing, too, and well be competing only in electric vehicles." www.itnsource.com reuters rtv521706
aaah! kill it with fire!
more video of the tesla roadster. it looks hot and it's damn near silent.
toshiba and matsushita have developed the thinnest lcd yet, coming in at just under a millimeter thick. the diminutive screen can be used in portable gadgets like cell phones where people just can't handle have anything big enough to feel in their pockets. you should start seeing phones with this tiny screen popping up in stores next april. source scifi.com
the bike looks cool... but it seems too long and too low to the ground.
a new style security gate has been unveiled at a show in japan which its makers hope will be able to beat fare evaders at train stations. the accordion shaped gate works by recognising pre-registered people and makes enough space for that person to pass through.
japan has done it apparently, and has developed a water powered car.
hopefully by then, i might have enough dough to go there to live in it...
back in the day, when rossi wasn't king, this [yamaha] race bike was fast! what a career track racing would be.
mesa, arizona — president barack obama pledged up to $275 billion on wednesday to help stem a wave of home foreclosures that sparked the u.s. financial meltdown, the next phase in an effort to lift the country out of recession. obama, who on tuesday signed a landmark $787 billion economic stimulus bill mixing government spending and tax cuts, rolled out details of the plan in arizona, a state hammered by the housing crisis. "all of us are paying a price for this home mortgage crisis. and all of us will pay an even steeper price if we allow this crisis to continue to deepen," obama said. treasury secretary timothy geithner told reporters he expected the plan to work quickly to help the housing market, and that it would bolster efforts to restore the financial system to good health. but financial markets reacted skeptically to the plan. u.s. stock prices were lower in early afternoon trading. earlier, the dow jones home construction index fell about 2 percent after government data showed u.s. housing starts and building permits dropped to record lows last month as a glut of unsold houses and a slump in demand spurred builders to shelve construction plans. obama's strategy has three main components. - a $75 billion fund would subsidize homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages. - housing finance companies fannie mae and freddie mac may invest a further $100 billion in mortgages to mop up more home loans and spur fresh lending. - washington may inject a further $100 billion into each of the mortgage giants, protecting them against losses as they expand their massive reach into the housing market. the housing crisis has played a central role in the financial and credit turmoil that spread across the globe, with many u.s. homeowners saddled with mortgages they cannot pay. the housing package was meant to be a more politically popular aspect of obama's plans to rescue the economy. his administration's plan to shore up the financial industry was met with a dive in stock prices last week. "this plan is good, but it is unnecessarily complicated," said michael cheah, senior portfolio manager at aig sunamerica asset management in new jersey. "every effort helps, but the question is effectiveness. i think it could come with side effects, like people trying to game the system." source in all this seriousness i had to add a tacky image. i just had to.
