by far the worst tunnel accident i've ever seen.
a fuji tv newscaster gets a special look at one of the gigantic storm drainage tunnels deep beneath tokyo. the tunnel shown in the video is about 40 meters (130 feet) underground and about 12.5 meters (41 feet) wide. while looking through the tunnel, the reporter and his guide are able to see marks left over from heavy rains that took place earlier this year, as well as a few marine animals that got washed in with the rainwater.
perspective on quantum mechanical tunneling. people have been asking for the math. so here it is. the sun`s core temp is ~13.6 mk. for hydrogen nuclei the coulomb barrier is roughly 0.1 mev. this corresponds to a temperature in excess of 1 gk! luckily, tunneling and the distribution of speeds among nuclei lower the actual temperature required. so without tunneling even the sun`s core isn`t hot enough for fusion
walking is one of those activities that's not only healthy for you, but good for the planet too. the wind tunnel footbridge is part modern sculpture, part green technology, and part weird. surrounding the bridge are five bladed wheels that spin like windmills when the breeze picks up. each wheel spins in an opposite direction and at varying speeds to make optimal use of wind direction. from a distance it looks like a modern work of art, but i can't imagine walking through the thing as i'm sure i would experience the same motion sickness i get when walking through a fun-house tunnel. best of all, this concept bridge is able to harness the wind that propels it to produce and store energy. designer michael jantzen thinks these could be constructed at public attractions like museums and parks, but i would really like to see these replace skywalks across highways. regardless, this bridge seems to be a heck of a lot safer than walking on a 4-inch piece of glass suspended over the grand canyon. source scifi.com

santiago (reuters) - police in chile, a country known more for mining than for prison breaks, discovered on wednesday an elaborate tunnel with built-in ventilation and noise barriers near a penitentiary in the santiago area. the 279-foot (85-meter) long tunnel resembled an underground mine structure, built with cement and wooden beams and boasting electrical power and carts for hauling away dirt and rock. police said the wives of two inmates at the colina ii prison had hired four miners to build the escape tunnel, which led from a nearby house toward the facility and was only 98 feet shy of an interior prison yard. "if the tunnel had reached its destination, as many as 200 people could have escaped," felipe harboe, the interior ministry's no. 2 official, told reporters. police heard about the tunnel while monitoring prisoners' telephone conversations as part of an investigation into drug trafficking. "the tunnel is striking. i don't know of anything like it in police history," rene castellon, a deputy director among police detectives, said about the structure that was nearly high enough in some places for an adult to stand upright. source
a german motorist mistook an underground train tunnel for a road and drove 200 metres along the tracks before he realized it. max kirsch, 29, faces drink driving charges after getting his vauxhall corsa stuck in the train tunnel in bochum. police and fire trucks had to be scrambled in the middle of the night to stop trains and help remove the car from the tunnel. kirsch, 29, had veered left into the tunnel after heading down a service road and had not realized what he had done. he told police he was simply trying to get to downtown bochum after seeing the latest harry potter movie. and despite the bumpy ride he claimed he had not noticed anything was wrong until the car ground to a halt when the suspension collapsed. police spokesman frank plewka said: "it seems he didn't notice something was wrong until he got out of the car. when he did realize where he was, he had to call the fire department to help get his car out. source
