Video:Saddam Trial Begins - Former Dictator Pleads Not Guilty

saddam trial begins - former dictator pleads not guilty

former iraqi leader saddam hussein has made an outspoken attack on the judicial process, before pleading not guilty at his trial in baghdad.

he refused to confirm his identity, and questioned the validity of both the trial and the judge.

"who are you? what does this court want?" saddam hussein asked the judge.

saddam and seven associates, who all pleaded not guilty, are charged with ordering the killing of 143 shia men in 1982 in dujail.

the trial is being heard in an imposing marble building that once served as the national command headquarters of saddam hussein's baath party, in the heavily fortified green zone in the iraqi capital.

tv pictures showed saddam hussein and his co-defendants being led into pens in the courtroom.

the 68-year-old former leader was wearing a dark suit with an open-necked shirt and carrying a copy of the koran. the bbc's john simpson in the court says he looked thinner and more sallow than in his last public appearance.

asked to confirm his name by chief judge rizgar mohammed amin, a kurd, saddam hussein refused.

"have you ever been a judge before?" saddam said.

amid some verbal sparring with the judge, the former iraqi leader stated: "i preserve my constitutional rights as the president of iraq. i do not recognise the body that has authorised you and i don't recognise this aggression. what is based on injustice is unjust ... i do not respond to this so-called court, with all due respect."

the trial is being presided over by five judges, with mr amin in overall charge. the identities of judges had been kept secret to ensure their safety, but mr amin's name was revealed by us officials just before the trial began.

a small number of observers and journalists are in the courtroom, but the public has been excluded.

the case is the first of many expected to be brought against the former iraqi leader.

it concerns the rounding up and execution of 143 men in dujail, a shia village north of baghdad, following an attempt there on saddam hussein's life. court officials say the case was chosen because it was the easiest and quickest case to compile.

the charge carries the death penalty, though saddam hussein and his associates have the right to appeal if they are found guilty.

prosecution lawyers are also expected to bring charges concerning the gassing of 5,000 people in the kurdish village of halabja in march 1988, and the suppression of a shia revolt following the first gulf war.

human rights groups have expressed concerns about the trial as a human rights watch report says the iraqi special tribunal "runs the risk of violating international standards for fair trials".

amnesty international has sent three delegates to baghdad to ensure saddam hussein receives a fair trial, and to oppose the death penalty if he is found guilty.

saddam hussein was captured in 2003 after the american-led invasion of iraq.

Video:Man Robs Judge At Own Trial

man robs judge at own trial

a 61-year-old german on trial for theft got himself into more trouble when he stole from the judge during his court hearing, police said. police in the central town of coburg said that while facing her at the bench, the man pocketed a bunch of keys from the judge, who did not notice until he had left the room.

when confronted by court officials in the toilet, the man, who had a string of convictions for theft, told them he had been shocked to discover the keys in his pocket.

"he told them he realised how suspicious his story would sound and that he had therefore hidden the keys under a toilet brush," said police spokesman bernhard schmitt. "he'd been stealing all his life so it was probably just an intuitive act."

while the court officials decided what to do next, the man wrote a written confession to the deed. the theft meant the initial trial had to be temporarily suspended on legal grounds in case the judge showed bias in the case.

defense lawyer in saddam trial shot dead

baghdad: the lawyer for a co-defendant of saddam hussein who was kidnapped just a day after the opening of the former iraqi dictator's trial over a massacre of shiites has been shot dead, officials said friday. the body of saadoun janabi, an attorney for awad hamad al-bandar al-sadun, one of saddam's seven co-defendants, was found dumped with bullet wounds to the head in the impoverished northern baghdad neighborhood of ur.

janabi had been seized from his office by two carloads of gunmen late thursday in an abduction that triggered calls from saddam's legal team for better protection for his iraqi lawyer, khalil al-dulaimi.

"the government condemns the killings," spokesman leith kubba said, adding the government had offered protection to members of the defense team. "we will not yield to blackmail or pressure." the murder, kubba said, "has all the fingerprints of kidnappings and killings by terrorist groups." janabi's client, a former chief judge of the revolutionary court and deputy head of saddam's office, sat next to the ousted leader in the dock when they went on trial wednesday for crimes against humanity over a 1982 murder of almost 150 shiites.

"if they can't protect lawyers, how are they going to defend their clients and how will witnesses dare to come before the tribunals," said badie izzat aref, a lawyer for former deputy prime minister tareq aziz who is also to face trial for crimes against humanity.

Video:Couple on Trial For Enslaving Mentally Ill

couple on trial for enslaving mentally ill

kansas husband and wife who ran a psychotherapy practice went on trial on tuesday on charges that they kept mentally ill people as slaves, forced them to perform sex acts on videotape and then billed medicare nearly $1 million for the "therapy."

prosecutors charged that arlan kaufman, 68, and his wife linda kaufman, 62, spent 18 years taking advantage of patients entrusted to their care. the couple ran a residential care facility in newton, kansas, where they worked with at least 20 mentally ill individuals from 1980 until 2004.

jury selection began tuesday for an expected five-week trial in u.s. district court in wichita.

authorities are seeking to prove that while the couple was billing relatives and insurers for therapy, rent, utilities and food, they were forcing the residents to engage in hard manual labor in the nude on a farm the couple owned outside of town.

prosecutors charged the residents were also forced to engage in a variety of sexually explicit acts, including masturbating, fondling each other and shaving each other's genitals, much of which was videotaped.

patients were physically injured or restrained if they resisted, authorities charged.

prosecutors have filed 33 criminal counts against the kaufmans including charges of forced labor, involuntary servitude, health care fraud, mail fraud and obstruction of a federal audit.

the kaufmans submitted just under $1 million in claims to medicare from 1991 through 2000 and were paid $216,906, authorities said.

defense attorneys for the kaufmans declined to comment. the couple faces more than 200 years in prison if convicted of all the charges.

i think they need to just turn these people over to the public, like in the old days. this kind of thing just sickens me right down to my soul. i seriously hope these people suffer a thousand times more then those they made suffer. no room for forgivness here folks, sorry...
