tram takes out a bunch of people.
new york city rescue teams worked into the early hours of wednesday to remove dozens of stranded passengers, including children, from two roosevelt island cable cars after the tram system lost power.
no injuries were reported.
"there are roughly 70 people on the trams and the problem looks to be a mechanical issue," a spokesman for the new york city police department said tuesday night.
the passengers became stranded over manhattan and the east river about 5:30 p.m.
buckets -- which can hold 15 people -- were attached to the cable to transport groups of passengers to safety, with children rescued first, police said.
the tram runs from manhattan to roosevelt island throughout the day in what is normally a four-minute ride across the river.
according to the roosevelt island web site, the tramway is the only one in north america used for mass transit, moving more than 26 million passengers since it began operations in 1976.
last year a similar tram incident occurred, although the trams were not stranded for long.
