"there are few mountain tourist trails as dangerous as the above pictured route on mt. hua in china's shaanxi province. not only does much of the trail consist of narrow footpaths and extremely steep staircases, but there are also a few sections where hikers must scale across cliffs on a rusty chain and some foot-sized holes chiseled in the rock. there's even a place where one must descend a 20 metre chain to reach the continuation of the trail. the video report claims that sometimes about 100 climbers a year fall to their deaths on the trail. luckily, people who don’t want to risk death can take a far safer trail on the other side of the mountain." (a japanese tv crew went to visit. sorry, there's no subtitles but you'll get an idea from the clip.)
in myth, atlas holds up the heavens, but in this stunning view a mountain appears to serve as the southern night sky pivots around a snowy peak. recorded during a climbing expedition at an altitude above 19,000 feet (temperature -18 degrees c), the picture places the south celestial pole over the andes mountain ojos del salado. topping out at over 22,000 feet, the ojos del salado is a stratovolcano, the highest active volcano on planet earth. the time exposure lasted for an hour, recording the graceful arcing star trails along with the rising milky way (left) and setting magellanic clouds.

a japanese legend claims that jesus escaped jerusalem and made his way to aomori in japan where he became a rice farmer. christians say the story is nonsense. however, a monument there known as the grave of christ attracts curious visitors from all over the world.
to reach the grave of christ or kristo no hakka as it is known locally, you need to head deep into the northern countryside of japan, a place of paddy fields and apple orchards.

the clandestine u.s. commandos whose job is to capture or kill osama bin laden have not received a credible lead in more than two years. nothing from the vast u.s. intelligence world -- no tips from informants, no snippets from electronic intercepts, no points on any satellite image -- has led them anywhere near the al-qaeda leader, according to u.s. and pakistani officials.
"the handful of assets we have have given us nothing close to real-time intelligence" that could have led to his capture, said one counterterrorism official, who said the trail, despite the most extensive manhunt in u.s. history, has gone "stone cold."
