Video:Woman Torches Tourists Genitals

woman torches tourists genitals

a greek woman accused of setting fire to the genitals of a british tourist in crete is due to appear in court.

the woman admitted assault after dousing the man's private parts in alcohol and igniting them, but says she did so after being sexually harassed.

police on the greek island say the tourist was drunk and had waved his genitals at several girls before allegedly groping the suspect.

the man suffered second degree burns and is recovering in a private clinic.

the 26-year-old suspect handed herself over to police, claiming she had acted in self defence.

she has won praise on crete for what has been seen as defending her honour, the bbc's malcolm brabant said.

according to police the 23-year-old tourist was drunk when he dropped his trousers in a nightclub in the resort of malia.

the suspect, who has not been named, said she doused the man in sambuca and torched him after she asked him to stop harassing her and he failed to stop.

she will be questioned by an investigating magistrate in the city of iraklion.

the case has been widely discussed on greek television, and there has been precious little sympathy for the young briton, said our correspondent.

he added that many greeks are sickened by british bad behaviour in malia and other resorts.

a foreign office spokeswoman said: "we can confirm that in the early hours of tuesday a 23-year-old british male national was assaulted in crete.

"we understand he suffered burns on his chest and abdomen.

"he has been receiving consular assistance."

a japanese internet whiz is tipped to become the world's fourth space tourist -- and he wants to orbit the earth dressed as an ace pilot from a hit japanese animation series.

the candidate for the $us20 million trip is japanese investor daisuke enomoto, a 34-year-old former board director of the livedoor internet firm headed by flamboyant entrepreneur takafumi horie, local media said.

enomoto has already passed medical checks and started flight training for a trip in late 2006, jiji press news agency reported.

enomoto said in january that he was likely to be the first japanese to make a paid space trip.

"i'm planning to do something amusing," he wrote then on his website.

if he gets russian approval, enomoto said he wanted to dress up on the trip as "char aznable", a character in the popular "gundam" hero robot series of animation whose name is inspired by french singer charles aznavour.

enomoto describes himself as a "gundam otaku" (geek).

Video:Tourist Outside Ghan Train For Two Hours

tourist outside ghan train for two hours

a young american tourist has survived a terrifying train ride in which he clung to the outside of the legendary ghan in the freezing dark as it hit speeds up to 110km/h in the south australian outback.

chad vance, 19, frantically pursued the ghan after missing it in port augusta, managing to climb on and squeeze himself into a tiny stairwell as the train raced for almost 200km through the night.

it was two hours and 20 minutes before a ghan crew member heard the alaskan student's desperate cries for help about 20km south of pimba and brought the train to an emergency halt, the sunday mail reports.

"i was worried i wasn't going to survive," mr vance said of his ride on thursday, may 28.

"if i'd fallen off at that speed and hit the nasty-looking rocks below, i don't think i would have made it."

the ghan crew member marty wells turned lifesaver when he heard mr vance's frantic calls for help and pulled the train's emergency brake handle, rescuing the tourist from a potentially fatal predicament.

"chad is a very lucky guy - when we rescued him his skin was white and his lips were blue," said mr wells, a technician with the ghan's operator, great southern railway.

"we were still about three hours away from our next scheduled stop and in that time, he could have easily died of hypothermia or lost his grip and fallen to his death if he hadn't been rescued."

mr vance's extraordinary tale of survival began when he boarded the ghan in adelaide on thursday for the journey to alice springs.

like most passengers in the seated carriages, he took an opportunity to stretch his legs during a short stop in the mid-north town of port augusta around 5.30pm.

the university student, from the small hamlet of north pole, in central alaska, went for a stroll in town, but after losing track of time arrived back at the platform just as the ghan was pulling out.

on board was all his luggage and valuables, including his passport and train ticket. having already travelled by train from sydney to adelaide, after arriving in australia on may 17, mr vance said he knew the ghan would pull up just outside of town to change drivers before continuing its journey.

he decided to chase the train before it came to a rest.

mr vance said when he caught up to the stopped train, he started frantically banging on the windows of the first class dining carriage. he said the passengers ignored him because they "probably thought i was some crazy kid" outside.

after five minutes, the train started to slowly pull away again, leaving mr vance thinking he would be stuck in port augusta with just $10, a digital camera and the shirt on his back.

the young tourist then made an "instinctive" decision - which he admitted in retrospect was a "pretty crazy idea" - and managed to grab hold of the stairwell near the rear of the train and swing himself into a cramped sitting position.

as the night progressed and the train picked up speed, the temperature outside the ghan plummeted.

according to the bureau of meteorology the thermometer dipped to 8.4c at woomera on the night in question. clad only in a pair of boots, jeans and a t-shirt, mr vance also had to deal with the severe windchill factor, which according to a weather calculator puts the temperature around -7c.

two hours and 20 minutes after jumping into the stairwell, mr vance's desperate calls for help were answered. mr wells said that after being brought on board, the exhausted and freezing backpacker collapsed to the floor.

"he was also shaking uncontrollably for several hours and complained of numbness to the left side of his body and arms and said his face was also stinging," mr wells said. "i've never seen anything like this before and i sure hope i don't ever see it happen again."

mr vance received first aid from the crew - including a cup of soup - and was upgraded to a sleeper cabin for a hot shower and warm night's sleep. his youth and a childhood of cold climate conditioning meant mr vance made a speedy recovery.

"i got off the train the next day in alice springs and headed out on a tour of uluru and kings canyon," mr vance said.

the psychology major student at the university of alaska fairbanks, left darwin today for cairns, for some scuba diving on the great barrier reef, before heading back to sydney and then home on june 17.

Video:Space Tourist Says Trip Worth Millions

space tourist says trip worth millions

a rich entrepreneur scientist who bought his own ticket to the international space station said from orbit tuesday that the trip was worth the millions of dollars he paid, and his only fear on launch day was not going.

"i'm having a great time. i mean, this is a dream come true," gregory olsen said at a news conference broadcast from the space station.

"this is my fourth day and i'm really enjoying it," he added. "just to look out and see the earth from about 230 miles up is just great."

the best part, olsen said, is "just being here." as for the reported $20 million he paid for the 10-day trip, "it's like the price and value argument. this is something i wanted to do, i love doing, so to me, yes, it's worth the money."

with his launch aboard a russian soyuz rocket on saturday from kazakhstan, olsen became the world's third paying space tourist. he made his fortune with sensors unlimited inc. of princeton, n.j., a company that makes devices for fiber-optic communications and infrared imaging. he is chairman of the board of directors and a co-founder.

olsen said he was not afraid during liftoff.

in fact, "as soon as that rocket launched, i was the most relaxed i've been in two years. i've had some ups and downs on this thing," the 60-year-old said, referring to his lengthy delay in flying for unspecified medical reasons.

"the only thing i was nervous about was maybe i wasn't going to go. and once i felt that rocket push off from the ground, i just felt that sense of relief and joy. the russian space agency has a great safety record and they're great at space, and with a crew like this, how could you go wrong?"

he said he has not suffered any of the typical space motion sickness.

olsen arrived at the space station monday with nasa astronaut william mcarthur and russian cosmonaut valery tokarev, who will spend the next six months aboard the orbiting complex. the scientist, who holds a doctorate, will return to earth early next week with astronaut john phillips and cosmonaut sergei krikalev, who have been in orbit since april.

phillips said he can't wait to devour "a hot steaming pizza and a big cold mug of beer," once he's back on earth. krikalev said a good cup of coffee, and fresh fruit and vegetables, sound good to him.

california money manager dennis tito visited the space station in 2001 and south african internet entrepreneur mark shuttleworth in 2002, in similar deals negotiated with russian space officials.

i'm guessing that ticket prices will drop after some terrorists crash a few planes into the side of the moon...

Video:Tourists Warned of UAE Drug Laws

tourists warned of uae drug laws

article submitted by geoblaze.

travelers to the united arab emirates are being warned about its severe drug laws which have seen dozens detained for apparently minor offenses.

fair trials international said arrests were being made over tiny quantities of drugs and over-the-counter medicines. fair trials, a legal charity, said it has seen a steep rise in such cases.

possession of painkillers like codeine and some cold and flu medication could result in a mandatory four-year prison sentence, fair trials international said.

in one of the most extreme cases, it reported a man being held after poppy seeds from a bread roll were found on his clothes.

in recent years, chic hotels, skyscrapers and golden beaches have turned dubai and abu dhabi into popular tourist destinations.

many have no idea what risks they're taking or their vulnerability to this very strict approach catherine wolthuizen, fair trials international chief executive

businesses too have flocked to the uae, which promises a high standard of living because of its oil wealth. however, while it is considered one of the most liberal countries in the gulf, the muslim country's drugs laws are severe.

last year, 59 britons were arrested in the uae on drugs-related charges, according to the foreign office.

catherine wolthuizen, chief executive of fair trials international, said customs authorities were using highly sensitive new equipment to conduct thorough searches on travelers.

"so many people now travel to dubai and, as we're seeing, many have no idea what risks they're taking or their vulnerability to this very strict approach," she said.

"if they find any amount - no matter how minute - it will be enough to attract a mandatory four-year prison sentence.

"what many travelers may not realize is that they can be deemed to be in possession of such banned substances if they can be detected in their urine or bloodstream, or even in tiny, trace amounts on their person."

aside from illegal substances, travelers have also been held for possession of prescription drugs.

fair trials international has published a full list of banned substances on its website.

the foreign office is advising all travelers carrying any prescription drugs to take a doctor's letter detailing exactly why they need the medicine and the exact dose.

the uae embassy in london said it would not comment at this stage.

held in the uae (according to fair trials)
*keith brown, 43, middlesex: four-year jail term for possession of 0.003g of cannabis
*robert dalton, 25, kent: on trial for alleged possession of 0.03g of cannabis
*20-year-old, west yorkshire: on trial for alleged possession of 0.02g of cannabis
*tracy wilkinson, 45, west sussex: held in custody for eight weeks for possession of codeine before release
*swiss national: four-year jail term after poppy seeds found on his clothes

busty tourist 'humiliated' at casino

a night of celebration turned to humiliation when an english tourist's "offensive" breasts upset fellow punters at the christchurch casino.

helen simpson, 33, from nottingham, was wearing a low-cut, black evening dress when a woman staff member told her to cover up or leave.

"she said i was wearing too low a top, which people found offensive," simpson said. "`i was highly embarrassed – humiliated, absolutely humiliated.

"there were girls at the casino wearing short skirts that i think are nothing more than belts. "i feel like i've been discriminated against for having big breasts."

one of simpson's group lent her a zip-up top to cover her chest, but the night got worse when she learned bar staff, croupiers and security staff had been told.

simpson, a business manager for mcdonald's who is in her third year studying human resource management, said the matter had been handled unprofessionally.

"the most humiliating thing was that everybody knew," she said.

simpson has written to casino management saying she left feeling "humiliated, discriminated and highly embarrassed".

she wrote: "being well-endowed in the upper region is something i did not choose in life and something i'm certainly not proud of.

"in turn, have you ever been shopping for a formal cocktail dress that is accommodating to a size 14 woman with the top half demanding a size 20?"

simpson said it was discrimination. "you don't see women with too small boobs being criticised, do you?"
