article submitted by master911. organizers of the 2010 winter olympics in vancouver are taking the mellow approach to suggestions that their planned olympic torch looks like a marijuana cigarette. "we're not worried about it at all," dave cobb, the executive vice-president of the vancouver organising committee said in response to a newspaper article that dubbed the torch "the olympic toke". vancouver is a major production area for illegal marijuana, and there has been quiet snickering about the comparison since the high-tech metal torch was unveiled in february to mark the one-year countdown to the winter games. the torch's design is intended to "represent canada through the contours of winter landscapes and lines of winter sports," according vanoc's website. but the design is slightly crimped at each end, with a twist in the body, giving it at least a passing resemblance to a hand-rolled marijuana joint. "i think people are poking a little bit of fun at us," vanoc chief executive john furlong said. the torch will travel the length and breadth of canada in a 106-day, 45,000km relay that starts in october and ends with the lighting of the olympic flame in vancouver in february 2010. vanoc says it has had more requests from canadian communities wanting to participate in the torch relay than the schedule can handle. the route will stay within canada. source<

a greek woman accused of setting fire to the genitals of a british tourist in crete is due to appear in court. the woman admitted assault after dousing the man's private parts in alcohol and igniting them, but says she did so after being sexually harassed. police on the greek island say the tourist was drunk and had waved his genitals at several girls before allegedly groping the suspect. the man suffered second degree burns and is recovering in a private clinic. the 26-year-old suspect handed herself over to police, claiming she had acted in self defence. she has won praise on crete for what has been seen as defending her honour, the bbc's malcolm brabant said. according to police the 23-year-old tourist was drunk when he dropped his trousers in a nightclub in the resort of malia. the suspect, who has not been named, said she doused the man in sambuca and torched him after she asked him to stop harassing her and he failed to stop. she will be questioned by an investigating magistrate in the city of iraklion. the case has been widely discussed on greek television, and there has been precious little sympathy for the young briton, said our correspondent. he added that many greeks are sickened by british bad behaviour in malia and other resorts. a foreign office spokeswoman said: "we can confirm that in the early hours of tuesday a 23-year-old british male national was assaulted in crete. "we understand he suffered burns on his chest and abdomen. "he has been receiving consular assistance." source

a passionate soccer fan could not tolerate both of his favorite teams being humbled on the same day.
like many norwegian football fans, the man from southern norway had a hard time watching the league title vanish for kristiansand club start after a controversial refereeing decision in the closing minutes of the last game of the season.
when the man's favorite english club, manchester united, was humiliated by middlesbrough later in the day, the man felt compelled to set fire to the local police office, newspaper agderposten reports.
"i have never heard such a strange explanation. the losses were just too much for him," police officer øystein krogstad told agderposten.
the 20-year-old man set krogstad's office on fire as sunday dawned, and only a quick reaction from a chance passerby prevented the wooden building from being consumed by flames. the man confessed when police checked him out as a possible suspect, and he is now charged with malicious mischief.
officer krogstad, who shares the norwegian passion for domestic and english football, was not without sympathy.
"start and united are also my two favorite teams, so i can understand his disappointment. but i have absolutely no sympathy for football being so important that someone can take such drastic action in pure frustration over a defeat," krogstad told agderposten.
