the fairchild-republic a-10 thunderbolt ii is a single-seat, twin-engine jet aircraft designed to provide close air support (cas) of ground forces by attacking tanks, armored vehicles, and other ground targets. as a secondary mission, it provides airborne forward air control, guiding other aircraft against ground targets. it is the first us air force aircraft designed exclusively for cas. the official nickname comes from the p-47 thunderbolt of world war ii, a plane that was particularly effective at the cas mission. however, the a-10 is more commonly known as warthog or simply hog. in the usaf inventory, the same airframe is also designated oa-10 when used primarily in a forward air control role.
first flown on 06/05/1941, the p-47 was designed as a high-performance fighter/bomber. in the entire history of military aviation, there has never been an airplane that could match the p-47 thunderbolt for ruggedness and dependability. the pilots nicknamed it "the unbreakable", p-47's often came back from combat shot full of holes, their wings and control surfaces in tatters.
republic p-47 thunderbolt, also known as the "jug" was the largest single-engined fighter of its day. it was one of the main usaaf fighters of wwii, and also served with other allied air forces. the p-47 was effective in air combat but proved especially adept at ground attack. it had eight .50-caliber machine guns, four per wing. when fully loaded the p-47 could weigh up to eight tons.
