colombo, sri lanka - a srilankan airlines stewardess called in a bomb threat because she wanted a day off, a newspaper reported sunday.
investigators traced the call and found that it was made from a mobile phone belonging to the stewardess' boyfriend, colombo's sunday times weekly reported.
"the inquiry reveals that the stewardess had given the false alarm because she did not want to fly that day," it said.
the stewardess was fired, it reported.
srilankan airlines spokeswoman ruvini jayasinghe declined to either confirm or deny the report and referred the call to senior officials, who were not immediately reachable.
in recent months, two bomb threats forced aircraft to return to the ground in sri lanka.
on oct. 3, a london-bound srilankan airlines plane returned to colombo's international airport after a telephone caller said there was a bomb on board. the aircraft landed safely and no explosives were found.

a 51-year-old woman who was barred from visiting her grandchildren at their school is facing a third-degree felony charge after a bomb threat was called in to the northeast side campus. velma gladys brewster was charged with making terroristic threats to windcrest elementary school at 465 faircrest. she was arrested thursday and released from jail after posting bail. bond for the third-degree felony charge was set at $10,000. when staff arrived at school on thursday, they heard a voicemail message warning of a bomb threat, according to an affidavit for arrest warrant. administrators recognized the female voice that left the message – which had been left wednesday night – as brewster's, according to an affidavit for arrest warrant. the trouble with brewster began the day before, when the school's principal issued a trespass warning after the woman attempted to visit her granddaughters without permission from her daughter, police said. according to the warrant, brewster was asked to leave the campus after causing a disturbance about 11 a.m. wednesday. the threatening message was left at 6:44 p.m. wednesday, police said, but school employees did not check the voicemail system until about 7 a.m. thursday. the threat prompted the school to evacuate up to 678 students and 85 faculty employees, while the windcrest and north east independent school district police departments investigated. the san antonio police department's bomb squad also assisted in a search for explosives, but no suspicious devices were found at the scene. source

kinshasa (reuters) - police in congo have arrested 13 suspected sorcerers accused of using black magic to steal or shrink men's penises after a wave of panic and attempted lynchings triggered by the alleged witchcraft. reports of so-called penis snatching are not uncommon in west africa, where belief in traditional religions and witchcraft remains widespread, and where ritual killings to obtain blood or body parts still occur. rumours of penis theft began circulating last week in kinshasa, democratic republic of congo's sprawling capital of some 8 million inhabitants. they quickly dominated radio call-in shows, with listeners advised to beware of fellow passengers in communal taxis wearing gold rings. purported victims, 14 of whom were also detained by police, claimed that sorcerers simply touched them to make their genitals shrink or disappear, in what some residents said was an attempt to extort cash with the promise of a cure.
