[florida]- you can have it your way, but you can’t halve it your way — at least not at the burger king on cape coral parkway. john mack found this out a week ago wednesday when he went to that burger king, ordered a whopper with cheese, fries and a drink and then asked the young man preparing the meal to cut the sandwich in half. after mack made the request, the worker looked at a woman mack assumed was the manager. she told mack that the restaurant policy was not to cut sandwiches. the problem: mack has one arm. “i was a little flabbergasted,” mack said, when the workers refused to cut the whopper. while serving in the u.s. military in 1977, mack suffered a “traumatic amputation” of his right arm, the 52-year-old cape coral man said. mack’s arm is removed 6 inches above the elbow. wearing a short-sleeve shirt, he still pointed out the obvious and told the worker that he was disabled. the woman said that plastic knives were available if he wanted to cut the sandwich himself. he said that if he could have cut the burger with a plastic knife, he wouldn’t have asked them to cut it for him. “she shrugged her shoulders,” mack said, “like whatever.” mack said he was hungry, so he bought the meal anyway. “i sat there and let it fall apart and ate it,” he said. i called the cape coral restaurant and the manager said she couldn’t discuss the incident. the cape coral parkway burger king is one of 27 burger king restaurant franchises owned by southern management corp. of belle glade. j. blanco, the director of operations, spoke to me. “that’s our policy, not to cut the sandwich,” blanco said. “we want to keep the employees safe so they don’t cut themselves and for the customers, too. the less you mess around with the customer’s food, the better.” employees are afraid they’ll lose their jobs if they violate corporate rules, blanco said. still, he contended, the manager should have exercised common sense and cut mack’s burger. blanco added that if he had been in the restaurant that day, he would have broken the policy, washed his hands and cut the sandwich himself. as blanco put it: “some things you do because it’s the right thing to do and the human thing to do.” source
england- a village suffered a power cut after a black thong became tangled in overhead cables, an energy distribution company said. the cut happened in the lincolnshire village of leadenham on wednesday afternoon after the thong was found wrapped in power lines above a croquet lawn. the underwear was apparently attached to a helium balloon which had gone astray. heavy rain had caused the thong to short circuit the cables, cutting power to 17 homes and businesses in the village. andrew barrow, a spokesman for electricity distribution company central networks, said: "our engineers are used to dealing with the unexpected but i think this might be a first for us." he added: "flying objects do occasionally cause us problems but in this case it was more risque than risky. "what we think happened in this case was the offending article was on the line for some time but it was the heavy rain yesterday – wet things conduct electricity – which led to the short circuit. "the main thing to say here is that if people do see something on the lines, don't try and get them down yourselves, that is when it becomes dangerous." engineers have now restored power to the homes. source
forests of "fake trees" should be planted across the country to reduce the impact of climate change, according to a study. experts claim the devices would be able to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. 100,000 of them would remove the carbon emissions of every car, lorry and bus in britain. the scientists argue that a single synthetic tree, which would be two-thirds as tall as a wind turbine, could capture ten tons of carbon dioxide from the air every day, making it thousands of times more efficient at absorbing co2 than a real tree. the study, by the institution of mechanical engineers, into how technology could prevent climate change argues that using technology to remove co2 from the atmosphere could buy the world vital time. the trees, which would cost around £15,000, would be coated with synthetic materials that absorb co2, which would then be removed and stored underground in depleted oil and natural gas reservoirs. the study also calls for pots of algae that absorb co2 from the atmosphere to be used to line buildings. the algae could then be used as green biofuels for cars. painting buildings white can also help reduce the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the earth, keeping it cool. the institution wants millions of pounds to be invested in research on technology to beat the threat of global warming to britain. dr tim fox, one of the report's authors, said: "geo-engineering may give us those extra few years of transition to a low- carbon world and prevent any one of the future climate change scenarios we all fear." the report also claims that unless we act soon global warming will continue unabated and predicts that global temperatures could increase as much as 6c by 2100, creating food and water shortages, sea level rises and massive refugee crises. source

manchester, iowa — authorities in northeast iowa say a man faces charges accusing him of cutting a pacemaker out of his father's chest. the delaware county sheriff's office issued a statement sunday saying 32-year-old jesse fierstine struck his 63-year-old father, charles fierstine, on the head with a flashlight and a piece of firewood saturday. the sheriff's office said jesse fierstine then used a pocketknife to cut the pacemaker out of his father's chest. the statement said the younger fierstine was charged with attempted murder. charles fierstine was taken to university of iowa hospitals and clinics in iowa city. officials didn't give details on his condition sunday. the sheriff's office said the deputy investigating the case was not available for comment. source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.

beijing (ap) -- forestry officials in far western china have resorted to scattering abortion pills near gerbil burrows in a bid to halt a rodent plague threatening the desert region's fragile ecosystem, state media said wednesday. the pellets, which resemble bran feed, have "little effect on other animals," but can prevent pregnancy in gerbils and also induce abortion in already pregnant females, the official xinhua news agency said. in 2003, officials installed hundreds of perches for owls and eagles hoping the birds would cut back the rodent population but gerbils have continued to be a problem, it said. gerbils use too much of the area's limited grass to make their burrows and damage plant roots with their underground digging, it said. desertification is a major concern for china. deserts currently cover about one-third of the country and officials fear global warming will accelerate their expansion. the report did not say what was in the "tailor-made" contraceptive pellets, which have been used in the gurbantunggut desert since may of last year. "it's a good way to tackle the desert rat plague," local forestry official du yuefei was quoted as saying. du, chief of the epidemic prevention division of the changji city forestry bureau, told xinhua 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of the drug was strewn over 49,000 hectares (120,000 acres) last year and cost the bureau 80,000 yuan ($11,400). there's been a slight drop in gerbil numbers since the program was started, du said, with about 11 gerbils now caught for every 100 traps laid out. previously, 12 gerbils was the average. contraceptive pellets have been mixed into bird feed in st. paul, minnesota to help rein in that city's pigeon population and officials in los angeles have used contraceptive injections on squirrels. animal rights groups often support contraception as a humane alternative to killing animals deemed pests. source
