chinese toddler kang mengru has become a medical marvel after having her dead twin removed from her stomach. kang's parents couldn't understand why their daughter's stomach was growing larger overnight and feared it could be a tumour. her swollen belly made her look pregnant and drew taunts from neighbors who branded her "a monster" but after doctors examined the 18-month old they discovered that she had an extremely rare condition, which affects 1 in 500,000 births - when one twin in the womb grows larger than the other and envelops its smaller sibling. the second fetus never fully develops, but continues to grow within the first baby, feeding off it like a parasite. it left kang, from henan provence, unable to eat solid food and spending her time in constant pain. kang had already had a difficult start to life. just days old, she was abandoned in a field by her parents. her cries were heard by farm worker wang guihua, 35, who took her home and nursed her back to health. wang and her husband kang xiqing, 43, had no children of their own and were allowed to foster kang. the worried couple took her to doctors who explained that kang had an unborn twin growing inside her, and that it was crushing her organs as it grew. her life was hanging in the balance, but her parents with a combined income of £400 a year, couldn't afford the £1,000 operation that their daughter so desperately needed. help arrived in the for of the red cross who raised the funds for kang through and appeal. she was rushed into surgery and after a grueling 10-hour operation, kang is now recovering well and will be able to live a normal life. her grateful mother thanked the red cross, saying: "we're very grateful. we were so worried she would die. before she used to cry in pain and hold her bump like a pregnant woman. now we can hope she can have a normal life." kang returned to her village in henan provence in september and is doing well, she is running round the village with the other children and is eating solid food. her mother said: "she doesn't understand what has happened to her. but she is happy. "she still has her womb and ovaries, so one day she will be able to have children of her own." source
a man who had one of his ears cut off when he was attacked in a park has described how doctors stitched it to his stomach in a bid to save it. student paul gibbs, from leeds, was attacked by three men as he camped out with a group of goth friends last year. because the ear was not found for 17 hours, surgeons could not immediately reattach it. instead, doctors stitched it inside his stomach so some of the tissue will re-grow. the plan is to then reconstruct the ear using some of the cartilage from 26-year-old mr gibbs's ribcage. he told the yorkshire evening post: "it's just a question of waiting for the operation. "it is going to hurt but i want it done. i'm strong-minded and feel like i am making good progress." mr gibbs was attacked in rothwell country park, near leeds, in august last year when he and a group of friends were camping out. he suffered brain damage when he was hit over the head with a motorbike helmet before his left ear was sliced off. mr gibbs was left in a coma following the incident. specialists in liverpool are behind mr gibbs's ear procedure. last week two 18-year-olds and a 22-year-old were convicted of attacking mr gibbs. they were each given indeterminate prison sentences with the younger men ordered to serve a minimum of two years and 210 days and the 22-year-old was told he must serve at least four-and-half years. source
article submitted by stbasdf . athens, greece (ap) -- a nine-year-old girl who went to hospital suffering from stomach pains was found to be carrying her embryonic twin, doctors in central greece said thursday. doctors at larissa general hospital examined the girl and surgically removed a growth they later discovered was an embryo about six centimeters (more than two inches) long. "they could see on the right side that her belly was swollen, but they couldn't suspect that this tumor would hide an embryo," hospital director iakovos brouskelis said. the girl has made a full recovery, he said. andreas markou, head of the hospital's pediatric department, said the embryo was a formed fetus with a head, hair and eyes, but no brain or umbilical cord. markou said cases where one of a set of twins absorbs the other in the womb occur in one of 500,000 live births. the girl's family did not want to be identified, hospital officials said. source
