a man who was angry he was not allowed to return items to a local wal-mart went to the men’s department and set three racks of clothes ablaze, according to a manatee sheriff’s report. the fire ruined thousands of dollars of merchandise and caused extensive damage to the store in the 2900 block of 53rd avenue east in east manatee county around 4 p.m. thursday. after the fire was discovered, employees saw a man flee the store in a tan pick-up, and other wal-mart stores in the area were notified to watch out for him. two hours later, deputies were called to the wal-mart near lockwood ridge road and university parkway, where they arrested a man who fit the arsonist’s description. phillip r. wright, 41, of monroe, louisiana was arrested on an arson charge in the incident, the sheriff’s office said. no one was injured in the fire, the report said. source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.

it's not a terribly uncommon event - someone leaves something in the oven, it gets a bit burny, and the next thing you know, a large part of their house is a smouldering ruin. a michigan man recently did just that, reducing his garage to ashes. the unusual part of the story is that he was trying to roast a bear. it is not known exactly why joe gorzynski had decided to roast the bear. but doing so cost him his garage, his oven, his fishing equipment, his tools and a collection of animal heads mounted on the wall. the bear also did not survive the conflagration. the fire raged so strongly (bears are clearly a good fuel source) that it melted vinyl shutters and the siding of his neighbour's property. hamlin fire epartment chief steve vandervest noted that while fires caused by turkeys were relatively common, bears weren't. 'this was a new one,' he commented. starts_fire_by_roasting_bear>source
hoping to trigger an ant civil war, u.c. irvine scientists are experimenting with a colorless potion that makes bosom-buddy arthropods try to decapitate one another, the los angeles times reported friday.
it could help rein in one of the planet's most troublesome pests -- the argentine ant.
throughout the state, the species has formed a massive super-colony that stretches from san diego to sonoma, wreaking havoc on wildlife, citrus crops and countless kitchens, according to the times.

yesterday the us supreme court started hearing the case on the legality of military tribunals at guantanamo.
supreme court justice scalia earlier made headlines with his take on the rights of the detainees held at guantanamo. he was asked to excuse himself, but so far has refused.
mr. katyal, lawyer for osama bin laden’s driver, salim ahmed hamdan, said that the tribunals are illegal. “this is a [tribunal] that is literally unburdened by the laws, constitution and treaties of the united states,” according to mr. katyal.
for a long time, detainees at guantanamo were refused basic rights, such as the right to contact a lawyer, or even knowing what the charges against them were. many have been denied the right to contact their family to let them know where they were. detainees on hunger strike, protesting their imprisonment, were denied the right to bodily integrity and force-fed. others have reported being tortured.
so far, of the 500 detainees at guantanamo, only 10 have been charged.
the case is seen as a challenge of president bush’s powers to fight terrorism the way he sees fit, ignoring us and international laws. the white house has tried to get the supreme court to drop the case, so far without success.
the hearing could put a stop to plans by the bush administration to hold military tribunals at guantanamo.
yesterday marked the beginning of the construction at ground zero.
construction of the 1,776 ft high freedom tower was finally started after months of disputes between the site’s owners, property developers, city and state agencies and objections by september 11 family members. the families concerns were mostly about the design of the memorial.
as construction trucks drove down the ramp to ground zero, governor george pataki said, "it is going to be a symbol of our freedom and independence."
the freedom tower will be as high as the wtc towers, but an illuminated spire will stretch the building to 1,776 ft.
it is expected that the tower will be finished by 2011, with five other towers completed in 2012. construction on the memorial has also begun.
