savvy criminals are using some of the country's most credible logos, including fedex, wal-mart, directv and the u.s. border patrol, to create fake trucks to smuggle drugs, money and illegal aliens across the border, according to a report by the florida department of law enforcement.

termed "cloned" vehicles, the report also warns that terrorists could use the same fake trucks to gain access to secure areas with hidden weapons.

the report says criminals have been able to easily obtain the necessary vinyl logo markings and signs for $6,000 or less. authorities say "cosmetically cloned commercial vehicles are not illegal."

in august 2006, the texas department of public safety, on a routine traffic stop, found 3,058 pounds of marijuana and 204 kilograms of cocaine in a "cloned" wal-mart semi-trailer, driven by a man wearing a wal-mart uniform.

in another case, a truck painted with directv and other markings was pulled over in a routine traffic stop in mississippi and discovered to be carrying 786 pounds of cocaine.

police said they became suspicious because the truck carried the markings or directv and several of its rivals. an 800 number on the truck's rear to report bad driving referred callers to an adult sex chat line.

trucks and vans marked as ambulances or law enforcement vehicles create the greatest concern, according to the report.

a fake u.s. border patrol van was found to be carrying 31 illegal aliens in casa grande, ariz.

an alert agent recognized that the "h" in the van's serial number is a letter used only on u.s. border patrol jeep wranglers. it should have been a "p."

"neither emergency service vehicles nor any government vehicles are exempt from terrorist or other criminal use," the report warns its law enforcement readers.

flynn smuggles counterfeit cigarettes

more than £1 million worth of counterfeit cigarettes filled with rabbit droppings instead of tobacco have been confiscated by customs officials in spain.

the fake cigarettes - due to be sold on the black market as famous brands - were discovered after british holidaymakers in the canary islands smelled a rat whenever they lit up.

"they stunk. they smell just as you'd imagine burning poo to smell," said one customs official in tenerife.

police and customs staff arrested 12 smugglers in an undercover operation to intercept the cigarettes as they landed on a boat from china.

"they not only smell bad but the toxic chemicals they give off are pure poison," explained a customs official.

woman smuggles stolen parrot in her bra

a woman has been arrested for padding her bra -- with a stolen rare parrot.

jill knispel, 35, hid the greenwing parrot in her bra after taking it from her employer, baby exotic birds of englewood, police said.

when knispel went to trade the bird for a vintage car, she told the car's owner how she got the animal, according to the fish and wildlife conservation commission. turns out the car's owner is friends with the man who owns the $2,000 bird.

dna tests confirmed the bird's identity and knispel was charged with grand theft.

"the circumstances of the case are the most bizarre i've ever encountered," said veteran wildlife investigator lenny barshinger.

pigeons smuggle cell phones into prison

sao paulo - inmates have devised an innovative way to smuggle cell phones into a prison farm in brazil: carrier pigeons.

guards at the danilio pinheiro prison near the southeastern city of sorocaba last week noticed a pigeon resting on an electric wire with a small cloth bag tied to one of its legs.

"the guards nabbed the bird after luring it down with some food and discovered components of a small cell phone inside the bag," police investigator celso soramiglio said tuesday. story continues below ?advertisement | your ad here

one day later, another pigeon was spotted dragging a similar bag inside the prison's exercise yard. inside the bag was the cell phone's charger, soramiglio said.

the birds were apparently bred and raised inside the prison, smuggled out, outfitted with the cell phone parts and then released to fly back.

"pigeons instinctively fly back home, always," the investigator said.

soramiglio said that police have not discovered who raised the pigeons or the name of the inmate who was going to receive the cell phone, but that he hoped the telephone carrier would provide the information.

"some of them are members of organized crime groups that use cell phones to talk to family and friends and to give and receive orders for criminal actions outside and inside prisons," soramiglio said.

in 2006, sao paulo's notorious first capital command used cell phones to coordinate a wave of assaults on police, banks and buses that left more than 200 people dead in south america's largest city.

the gang's leaders are based in prisons, and use smuggled cell phones to plan and execute drug deals, kidnappings and bank robberies.

343 bear paws smuggled through russia

russian border guards have detained two chinese citizens for smuggling of a 343 bear paws and 25 kilograms of red caviar through the russian village of nizhne-spasskoe in russia's far east, the village that borders china's heilongjiang province, russian website gazeta.ru reports.

according to the reports the smugglers, who have not been named, were trying to carry their illegal cargo to chinese territory by boat.

“the chinese have been living in russia as illegal immigrants for several years. a russian court has opened a criminal case against the two smugglers for illegally crossing the frontier and carrying contraband,” a spokesman of the russian frontier administrative department said.

dishes made of bear paw are delicacies and are very expensive in the chinese province of gancu. the majority of luxury restaurants cook bear paws for their vip clients. however, trading bear paws is prohibited in china.
