a dutch store owner is sick of shoplifting, so he decides to make a huge celebration of the 10000th shoplifter.
britons are the most prolific shoplifters in europe, a survey published wednesday showed.
they stole 3.58 billion pounds of goods from their nation's shops last year, the equivalent of 1.59 percent of british retail turnover.
razor blades were the most stolen item followed by alcohol and toiletries, according to the british-based center for retail research.
finland had the second worst shoplifting problem followed by portugal and greece while the swiss were the most disciplined shoppers, the survey showed. theft accounted for 0.89 percent of swiss retail turnover.
in all, europeans stole 30.8 billion euros worth of goods from their stores last year -- 71.5 euros per person.
customers were blamed for 48 percent of the thefts, staff for 29 percent and suppliers for 7 percent.
the survey covered 423 retailers in 24 countries, accounting for 20 percent of european retail turnover.

(ap) -- "it was a fairly minor crime with a fairly major consequence." those were the words of eaton county undersheriff fred mcphail, describing a series of events monday morning that led from the theft of less than $500 worth of children's clothing to a woman being crushed in a trash compactor. police were called at about 10:15 a.m. monday by an employee of the goodwill store on west saginaw highway who said a woman was screaming, stuck inside the trash compactor, which was on at the time. the compactor is located behind the store. mcphail said it appears tate ignored the multiple "keep out" signs and climbed into the compactor, which was not on at the time. the sister was found hiding near the compactor, and tried to run from police toward a nearby meijer store but was quickly arrested, he said. the sister was uncooperative and told police she barely knew tate - and only by her street name, diamond - and didn't know where she was, mcphail said. at the same time, a goodwill employee turned the compactor on to use it. "i think it's very likely that if she had told police where her sister was, they would have arrested (tate) and she wouldn't have been crushed," mcphail said. "i'm sure that she's agonizing over that decision, being her sister." that woman, tyree monique tate, 26 of delta township, was extracted and transported to a nearby hospital, where she died tuesday morning. preliminary autopsy reports list the cause of death as multiple crush injuries. source, source have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.

two students who tackled a shoplifter who was stealing from the store they were working at have been fired. jared bergstreser, 20, and colin trapp, 23, were fired on sunday, two weeks after they tried to stop two men fleeing the best buy in broomfield, canada. when the students saw the men leave with what the assumed was stolen goods, mr bergstreser tackled one of the men, denver news reports. "a gentleman came by us in a red shirt with a bunch of product in his hand. it was pretty obvious that he hadn't paid for it yet," mr trapp said. "i just kind of reacted. i wasn't thinking about it and followed the guy out the front door and tackled him," mr bergstreser said. as mr bergstreser was struggling with the thief on the ground, mr trapp ran over to help. "we thought we had the situation under control. that's when he pulled a knife and began flailing it around wildly," mr trapp said. the man broke free and eventually cut the store's manager. the shoplifters escaped in a car driven by a woman, according to police. a police report said the two men got away with computer hard drives and other items but are yet to make any arrests. "it was just completely demoralising. you think you have in your head what you know is right or wrong, what your parents instilled in you growing up as a child, and then to be reprimanded for that act is so sour and so sad," mr trapp said. best buy spokesperson kelly groehler refused to discuss the situation. "employees who in our stores are aware, and trained, on the standard operating procedures for dealing with shoplifting or theft - which includes ceasing pursuit of a suspected shoplifter once they exit the store," she said. mr bergstreser had worked at the store for nearly three years and received minor cuts and bruises in the incident. he said he understands the company's concerns but disagrees it was enough to have him fired. source
colne, england, -- british police said they arrested a man who showed up for a job interview at a store he had stolen from three days earlier. investigators said simon holden, 22, applied for a job at a colne, england, asda supermarket and was recognized by the manager when he arrived for an interview, the sun reported. store bosses said closed-circuit tv footage depicts holden stealing four boxes of lager from the store three days before his interview. they said holden ran off with two more crates of alcohol after he discovered he had been recognized. "it must have taken some brass neck for this man to apply for a job at the store he stole from just days earlier," an asda worker said. "normally employers have to check job references when it comes to looking at cvs -- not check cctv footage to see if their candidates might have been spotted shoplifting there a few days beforehand. as applying for jobs go this one ranks with having the most breathtaking cheek ever." holden was arrested hours after the aborted interview and charged with breaching a suspended jail term for a house burglary. source
