the sea shadow incorporates a small water plane area twin hull (swath) hull form with canted struts extending below the water line to torpedo-shaped hulls. the design allows for exceptional sea keeping performance. fins mounted on the front and back of the inboard sides of the lower hulls provide the control surfaces for turning the vehicle, eliminating the need for conventional rudders and reducing drag. the ship's sloped sides are an extension of the angled struts, whose design are driven by signature, hydrodynamic and structural considerations. several technologies from the sea shadow have been incorporated into navy ships including signature control on arleigh burke-class destroyers. also, sea shadow's small waterplane area twin hull (swath) technology has been incorporated into the tagos-19, a twin hull ocean surveillance ship. http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ship/sea_shadow.htm
the beach where the turtle laid its eggs is a popular tourist destination, so local authorities have placed a small barrier around the egg site to protect the baby turtles. it is the first time in 16 years that there has been a confirmed sighting of a sea turtle laying its eggs in the area. a mainichi article earlier this month reported that record numbers of sea turtles have been spotting coming ashore at spawning grounds in kyushu.
for the first time ever, dolphins have been filmed helping each other out at sea. south korean scientists caught up with these in the sea of japan.
in 1949 the world changed forever as oil was struck for the first time in the sea off the coast of azerbaijan. before long the first oil platform was built around this site but that wasn’t all: dorms, schools, stores and other structures were all built up around this rig forming a virtual city on the water. ships were brought out and sunk to form the basis of a series of man-made islands. connected by a network of bridges and other structures this community has dwindled and is now all but deserted with buildings falling back into the sea.
huge atomic bomb explosion under the sea. the ships give you an idea on how huge the explosion is.
this shows the annual minimum arctic sea ice extent and concentration from 1979 to 2006. from here.
"a boat? a plane? a bit of both in fact. the soviet 'ekranoplan' was one of the more obscure products of the fight for technological supremacy in the cold war. in september 1966 an american spy satellite flew over a soviet naval base on the caspian sea and took a series of photographs. this being the height of the cold war, the results created quite a stir among the american intelligence community, because they showed an object, more than 100m long with inexplicably stubby, square wings, quite unlike anything they had seen before." more info at bbc: news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/7638659.stm
