a babysitter's parrot is being credited with helping save the life of a 2-year-old girl who was choking friday at a denver area home while the sitter was in the bathroom. "while i was in the bathroom, willie (the parrot) started screaming like i'd never heard him scream before and he started flapping his wings," said meagan, the babysitter. "then he started saying 'mama baby' over and over and over again until i came out and looked at hannah and hannah's face was turning blue because she was choking on her pop tart." meagan performed the heimlich maneuver on hannah, which stopped the choking. "if (willie) wouldn't have warned me, i probably wouldn't have come out of the bathroom in time because she was already turning blue, her lips were blue and everything," meagan said. source

muncie, ind. - a noisy parrot that likes to imitate sounds helped save a man and his son from a house fire by mocking a smoke alarm, the bird's owner says. shannon conwell, 33, said he and his 9-year-old son fell asleep on the couch while watching a movie. they awoke about 3 a.m. friday to find their home on fire after hearing the family's amazon parrot, peanut, imitating a fire alarm. "he was really screaming his head off," conwell said. the smoke alarm had activated, but it was the bird's call that caught conwell's attention. "i grabbed my son and my bird, and got out of the house," he said. the fire destroyed the home's dining room, kitchen and bedroom, muncie fire officials said. it remains under investigation. aside from peanut, conwell said the fact that he and his son fell asleep on the couch helped save them. they may not have heard the alarm or the bird if they were asleep in their bedrooms. conwell said he runs an air conditioner and a breathing machine in his bedroom and they drown out a lot of noise around the house. source

accountant helen kelly was caught in the crossfire of a gang war last year outside the urban music awards venue in central london, and was hit as she ran for safety along with a friend. however, her life got saved as the bullet hit the underwire of her bra, snapping it, and deflecting away from her chest and through her right breast.
"there was a lot of blood but i didn't know where it was coming from. i could see where the bullet had gone in but not where it came out," the sun quoted the 24-year-old as saying.

a british doctor used text message instructions from a colleague to perform a life-saving amputation on a boy in africa. vascular surgeon david nott helped the 16-year-old while working with medecins sans frontieres in the democratic republic of the congo. the boy's left arm had been ripped off by a hippopotamus and was badly infected and gangrenous, reports the bbc. mr nott, 52, knew he needed to perform a forequarter amputation, which requires the surgeon to remove the collar bone and shoulder blade. he had never performed the operation before but followed instructions from a colleague who had. the surgeon, who is normally based at charing cross hospital in london, said: "i texted him and he texted back step-by-step instructions on how to do it. "even then i had to think long and hard about whether it was right to leave a young boy with only one arm in the middle of this fighting. "but in the end he would have died without it so i took a deep breath and followed the instructions to the letter. i knew exactly what my colleague meant because we have operated together many times." the surgeon had just one pint of blood and an elementary operating theatre, but the operation, performed in october, was a success and the teenager made a full recovery. mr nott, who volunteers with msf for a month every year, said: "it was just luck that i was there and could do it." source, source
