wheeling, w.va. (ap) - all kinds of things turn up when velas diving and supply holds diving classes under water. but there has never been a find like the one that occurred sunday in wheeling creek, said ted velas, owner of the company.
dive master joe carney found three safes and six cash drawers at the bottom of the creek while he and another dive master were training a student.
the items were located about 5 feet from the creek bank and 3 feet under water on a ledge, according to wheeling police department reports.
a money bag found in one safe belonged to a wheeling business and the items could be connected to a series of breaking and enterings, according to police reports.
"it feels good to help the police recover things," velas said.
while no money was recovered, the items found will be evidence that could help with the investigation, wheeling police lt. randy rejonis said monday .

a former financial consultant for the halifax bank in britain left a £7m iou in the safe of the bank he had robbed, a court heard yesterday.
graham price, of llansamlet, swansea, admitted 43 charges of theft and asked for a further 263 offences relating to a £10m scam to be taken into account.
the 58-year-old stole cash from the bank and dozens of investors while working at the gowerton branch office.
linda baker, prosecuting, told magistrates in swansea on tuesday that price began taking money from the safe and stealing from investors' accounts in january 2001.
when halifax auditor lesley tucker opened the safe of the bank last year he found only three empty boxes and a scrap of paper, mrs baker said.
price had written and signed a note declaring 'i have borrowed £7m from the halifax'.
he stole £3m of the money over a nine-day period last summer, the hearing was told.
mrs baker said: "it appears that over a period of time he was removing money from the safe and taking it from investors."
price disappeared after the halifax discovered money was missing but he was traced and arrested.
asked whether he admitted the charges price told the court: "each and every one."

british american tobacco (bat) is to launch a controversial “safer cigarette” designed to cut the risk of smoking-related diseases such as cancer and heart failure by up to 90%.
the cigarettes use tobacco treated to produce lower levels of cancer-causing chemicals. they also incorporate a new type of filter said to remove more of the remaining toxins.
the company wants to launch the cigarettes in 2006 but has kept the move secret, knowing it would infuriate anti-smoking groups.

fairhope, ala. — the event was planned and advertised weeks ago: at the new fairhope museum of history, officials would open a city safe that had been unused since 1971. what would be inside? nothing? old city records? this week, a crowd of nearly 30 fairhopers watched as locksmith nevitt baker lifted away its heavy, black door. a musty smell filled the room, and the crowd laughed as news cameras and curious locals closed in on the open safe. one woman rushed her young son out of the museum, saying she didn't want him to see what was inside. a few called out the obvious — its bottom shelves were filled with marijuana. the vault apparently had last been used by police investigators to stash drug evidence. "here is somebody's name, somebody i remember, who would be terribly embarrassed right now," said donnie barrett, the museum's director, later thursday as he examined a label attached to one of several matchboxes filled with dry, 37-year-old dope. "it looks like a whole bunch of dope is what we've found here. i wish it was a little bit more than that." why was this evidence left behind or forgotten? "that's not the sort of historical question we'd wanted to have to ask," barrett said. soon, police cpl. brett murray confiscated the old contraband. he said he and his friends had speculated about the safe's contents since they were young, when it was in a building used by the police department. but its combination had been lost and its door had been painted shut, he said. murray said he'd have the evidence placed in the department's current evidence vault for later processing or disposal by investigators. among items in the safe were a green diary with a peace symbol drawn on its front, a cup containing a collection of small bags of marijuana, a few rolled joints, several matchboxes and small manila envelopes containing more marijuana with accompanying written materials, some drafted by officers and others by witnesses. "i'm a little disappointed that we didn't find a lot of history. we found a lot of dope," barrett said. source
chicago - an alleged thief wasn't fazed when workers at a chicago muffler shop told him a safe he wanted to rob wasn't open. he just asked them to give him a call when their boss returned with the combination. the 18-year-old got a call. but so did chicago police. when ruben carate returned to velasquez & sons mufflers for less on monday, plainclothes chicago police officers shot and wounded him in the leg. carate was charged tuesday with attempted armed robbery and aggravated assault of a police officer, the cook county state's attorney's office said. "he gave us his phone number when we told him we didn't have any money. he told us to call him back when the owner came back with the money and he was going to come back and rob him," said worker tony diaz. "it's pretty funny now, but it wasn't at the time," diaz said. a masked man entered the shop with a gun and demanded money around 8 a.m., said mechanic jose sida. employees told him they carried little cash and couldn't open the safe, so the man left two numbers to call when the owner came in, sida said. "no one could make this up," said police lt. scott schwieger. the man returned around noon, wearing the same mask and clothing. officers told employees to get to the back of the shop, sida said. carate was treated at advocate illinois masonic medical center for a gunshot wound, said mark payne, a spokesman for the independent police review authority. an inquiry into the shooting will take six months to complete, he said. source
is sex safer in taiwan or can it be? the alarming increase of stds and abortions is forcing the taipei city government department of health to take significant action by appealing to teenagers to use condoms during intercourse. the statistics speak grimly for themselves. in the last year, the youngest case of syphilis infection in taipei city was just 14, with 17 as the youngest age for a case of aids. for those who fall within the 15-19 age group, since 2008, aids infections grew from 1-5, hiv infections from 5 to 9, syphilis incidence from 13 to 22 and condyloma infections from 8 to 17. the above poster addresses the population that needs help the most. it is funny according to some, but its message is far from amusing. the bottom caption translates into: “be careful, this is what could happen if you don’t wear a condom.” the word, condom, translated from the chinese reads: “avoid pregnancy cover” and “safety cover.” in the poster, the word is amusingly referred to as “insurance cover.” as long as it serves as a warning, taipei authorities are not concerned about whether those who view the poster are amused or not. their primary interest lies with the more than 77 percent of teenagers who became infected with stds via unprotected sex over the course of the last few years. in this age of “information technology,” what was once considered private and taboo is not only considered half-heartedly acceptable but also inescapably in-the- face advertising. taipei authorities are desperate and intent on changing the statistics that are steadily stealing the vitality and long-term health of its youth. it is hoped this poster will shove its message down the throats of those too busy to listen and unprepared to tackle the consequences of one moment’s unprotected pleasure in exchange for a lifetime of serious, debilitating illness. source
