inspired by the artwork schenkel produced for the fourth zappa/mothers of invention album, released in 1968, titled "cruising with ruben & the jets". since zappa was a huge fan of do-wop music, it only made sense that he'd craft an album of original do-wop compositions done in only-zappa arrangements and with always-hilarious lyrics. thus were born ruben & the jets.
