why are companies allowed to get big enough to pose a 'systemic risk'? an aig report to the treasury department last month warned that if the government didn't come to its rescue again, its collapse would trigger a "chain reaction of enormous proportion" that would "potentially bankrupt or bring down the entire system" and make it impossible for aig to repay the billions it already owed the u.s. government. i believe the correct term here is "extortion."

a regular tipple cuts the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by up to half, swedish research suggests. the karolinska institute assessed 2,750 people in two studies, annals of the rheumatic diseases reports. the risk was up to 50% lower for those who drank the equivalent of five glasses of wine a week compared with those who drank the least, they found. however, arthritis experts warned that drinking too much alcohol increased the risk of a range of health problems. rheumatoid arthritis - an auto-immune disease caused by a malfunctioning immune system - is a condition which results in tender, stiff and swollen joints. it affects 400,000 people in the uk. the two separate studies assessed environmental and genetic risk factors for rheumatoid arthritis. participants were quizzed about their lifestyle, including how much they smoked and drank, while blood samples were taken to check for genetic risk factors. researcher dr henrik kallberg added: "in addition, it is important to know that moderate alcohol consumption is not deleterious and may in some contexts be beneficial concerning risk for future onset of rheumatoid arthritis." there are known to be links between moderate alcohol consumption and a reduced risk of other inflammatory processes, such as cardiovascular disease. however, the reason for this is still unclear. professor robert moots, from the arthritis research campaign, said it was possible that drinking alcohol may have a protective effect against rheumatoid arthritis. but he said the study was not conclusive and any protective effect was not properly understood. he said: "there is no doubt that drinking too much is very bad for our health in many ways and these risks by far outweigh any potential benefit for reducing the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, which this study points to, without being conclusive. "we must also remember that drinking alcohol in excess can be especially dangerous in patients taking some anti-rheumatoid drugs that may cause liver damage. "there are many modifiable lifestyle risk factors for developing rheumatoid arthritis and, as this study also points out, smoking is by far the greatest." a spokesman for arthritis care said: "it's too early to say what these findings may mean, so people with rheumatoid arthritis should continue to work in partnership with their health professionals to address their specific health needs." source
smokers are twice as likely to lose their sight as non-smokers, according to the royal national institute for the blind.
the charity is launching a poster campaign across britain to raise awareness of the connection between smoking and sight loss.
the rnib has found only 7% of people are aware of such a link.
experts believe around 54,000 smokers have developed a condition called age-related macular degeneration (amd).the amd alliance uk claims the link is as strong as that between smoking and lung cancer.
the rnib is calling on the government to introduce warnings on cigarette packets about the risk to eyesight.
research has shown the risk starts to decrease 10 years after smokers quit the habit.

around a quarter of the world's population speaks just three languages: mandarin, english and spanish. but out of the 6,700 of the world's identified languages, nearly 2,500 are deemed at risk according to unesco, the un's cultural body. the imposition of a colonial language long ago in big countries such as brazil and america is still endangering the diversity of native tongues. in america, 53 languages have become extinct since 1950, more than in any other country. source
article submitted by pwningnubs. washington (reuters) – marijuana use may increase the risk of developing testicular cancer, in particular a more aggressive form of the disease, according to a u.s. study published on monday. the study of 369 seattle-area men ages 18 to 44 with testicular cancer and 979 men in the same age bracket without the disease found that current marijuana users were 70 percent more likely to develop it compared to nonusers. the risk appeared to be highest among men who had reported smoking marijuana for at least 10 years, used it more than once a week or started using it before age 18, the researchers wrote in the journal cancer. stephen schwartz of the fred hutchinson cancer research center in seattle, one of the researchers, said the study was the first to explore marijuana's possible association with testicular cancer. "this is the first study to look at this question, and by itself is not definitive. and there's a lot more research that would have to be done in order to be more confident that marijuana use really is important in a man's risk of developing testicular cancer," schwartz said in a telephone interview. the study found the increased risk appeared to be in the form called nonseminoma testicular cancer. it accounts for 40 percent of cases and can be more aggressive and more difficult to treat, schwartz said. experts are unsure about the causes of testicular cancer, which often strikes men in their 20s and 30s. the disease is seen more commonly in men who have had an undescended testicle or have a family history of testicular cancer. the disease usually responds well to treatment and has a five-year survival rate of about 96 percent, according to the american cancer society. about 8,000 men in the united states are diagnosed with testicular cancer per year, and there are about 140,000 u.s. men alive who have survived the disease, the group said. the researchers said they were not sure what it was about marijuana that may raise the risk. chronic marijuana use also can have effects on the male reproductive system including decreased sperm quality, they said. source
a marriage-minded man ran naked through his neighborhood, trying to show his hesitant girlfriend that taking risks is important. he got more than he bargained for when he ended up being chased and shot at.
"just when you thought you had heard everything," ann arbor police detective sgt. jim stephenson told the ann arbor news.
the couple were discussing marriage early wednesday when the woman said she wasn't sure if she was ready, according to ann arbor police reports. the man responded that taking risks is an important part of life and, to prove his point, jumped out of a first-floor window and ran naked across the street.
before he could return, he spotted a couple walking and hid in some bushes to avoid them. a 28-year-old man noticed the bushes rustling and bare feet underneath, then drew a .40-caliber handgun and ordered the naked man out, police said.
the naked suitor ran away, but the armed man gave chase and threatened to shoot, police said. the gunman fired a shot and the naked man fell to the ground, suffering minor injuries.
a resident called police, who arrested the gunman on charges of aggravated assault and carrying a concealed weapon. he was taken to the washtenaw county jail but released following further investigation, police sgt. patrick hughes told the associated press.
the naked man was not arrested and didn't want to pursue charges, hughes said.
