they say "everything old is new again," and hollywood couldn't agree more – especially when you throw a bunch of smart-alecky teenagers with their fancy hair and complicated shoes into the mix. producers get paid big bucks to know that "high concept" stuff like shakespeare and jane austen and cinderella hurts people's brain bones and puts them off their popcorn. they also know that with a small tweak here and a wave of the hollywood magic wand there (not to mention a quick relocation of the story to the san fernando valley), a classic can become something fresh and, uh, newish. 10 things i hate about you (1999) cast: heath ledger, julia stiles, joseph gordon-levitt premise: in a retelling of shakespeare's in-no-way-sexist taming of the shrew, high school outcast cameron (levitt) devises a roundabout (and intrigue-filled) scheme to date the "untouchable" bianca (larisa oleynik). hint: it involves teen bad boy cameron (ledger) dating her rebellious sister kat (stiles). shenanigans and hilarity ensue. omg!!1! factor: the sexy cast has loads of chemistry, so 10 things is, like, totally guilty fun! rent it already!
a cinderella story (2004) cast: hillary duff, chad michael murray premise: this hillary duff vehicle is an adaptation of, well, the cinderella fairytale. set in modern california, it follows sam (duff), a high school girl forced by her evil step-mother (jennifer coolidge) to work as a busgirl in the diner her deceased father once owned. eventually, she meets her prince charming, austin (murray), and after the usual misunderstandings, lives happily ever after. omg!!1! factor: hils is, like, seriously cute in this one — and she has great hair! but the movie totally blows!
get over it (2001) cast: kirsten dunst, ben foster premise: in a loose (and we mean loose) retelling of shakespeare's a midsummer night's dream, heartbroken berke tries to get over his ex-girlfriend by joining his friend kelly (dunst) in his school's performance of (you guessed it) a midsummer night's dream. surprisingly, alright (despite sisqo's involvement), the film features a great supporting cast and some genuinely funny moments. omg!!1! factor: this is based on shakespeare's summer nice dream or something and has carmen electra as a stripper!
o (2001) cast: julia stiles, mekhi phifer, josh hartnett premise: transplanting shakespeare's othello from a drafty sixteenth century castle to a high school basketball court, o follows the rise of odin (phifer), a likeable jock superstar who's dating desi (stiles), the most popular girl in school. but when overlooked basketball player hugo (hartnett) plants seeds of doubts in odin's head, it all comes tumbling down. omg!!1! factor: why is josh hartnett so totally harsh to the guy from 8 mile? i don't get it.
whatever it takes (2000) cast: shane west, james franco, marla sokoloff premise: chris (franco) offers to help ryan (west) woo high school temptress ashley (jodi lyn o'keefe) in exchange for ryan's aid in playing his best friend, maggie (sokoloff), into chris's arms. while based on french classic cyrano de bergerac, whatever it takes isn't high on anyone's teen movie list, let alone our teen adaptation one. omg!!1! factor: like, ewwww!
she’s the man (2006) cast: amanda bynes, channing tatum premise: in this twisted take on shakespeare's twelfth night, viola (bynes) is devastated when her girls' soccer team is cut and she's prohibited from trying out for the boys' team. when her twin brother ditches his prep school to travel to europe, she decides to dress like a guy and take his place. things get complicated when she falls for her brother's roommate (tatum). omg!!1! factor: wearing a bad wig and talking in a southern accent does not make you a dude, 'k? skip it.
carmen: a hip hopera (2001) cast: beyoncé knowles, mekhi phifer, mos def, casey lee premise: based on georges bizet's opera, this mtv production follows an aspiring actress (knowles) who is torn between a devoted cop (phifer) and an up-and-coming rapper (lee). omg!!1! factor: we've got nothing but mad love for b, but she should stick to music.
cruel intentions (1999) cast: sarah michelle gellar, ryan phillippe, reese witherspoon premise: in this trashy yet fun teen adaptation of choderlos de laclos' 1782 novel, les liaisons dangereuses, kathryn (gellar) makes a bet with her stepbrother, sebastian (phillippe), that he can't seduce the virginal annette (witherspoon). if kathryn wins, she gets sabastian's jaguar. if sebastian wins, he gets kathryn. omg!!1! factor: watch this one when the 'rents are out, 'cause it's kinda naughty. *blushes*
clueless (1995) cast: alicia silverstone, paul rudd, stacey dash premise: loosely based on jane austen's corsets-and-winsome-blushes-filled novel emma, clueless subs in modern-day beverly hills for victorian england, yet manages to keep the clever class and gender critiques central to the original. silverstone has never managed to hit the same stride as she had in this tightly written and funny flick. omg!!1! factor: the jokes are so roflmao funny, you will totally spit out your red bull!
she's all that (1999) cast: freddie prinze jr., rachael leigh cook, paul walker premise: this isn't the only modern retelling of george bernard shaw's pygmalion, but it's the best. cocky high school senior zach (prinze jr.) makes a bet that he can turn any loser into a prom queen, and gets stuck with awkward art geek laney (cook). omg!!1! factor: um, it's only the radest teen flick to come out since those ancient john hughes ones from the '80s. should you see it? totes!
