the u.s. house of representatives definitively rejected the concept of net neutrality on thursday, dealing a bitter blow to internet companies like amazon.com, ebay and google that had engaged in a last-minute lobbying campaign to support it.
by a 269-152 vote that fell largely along party lines, the house republican leadership mustered enough votes to reject a democrat-backed amendment that would have enshrined stiff net neutrality regulations into federal law and prevented broadband providers from treating some internet sites differently from others.
of the 421 house members who participated in the vote that took place around 6:30 p.m. pt, the vast majority of net neutrality supporters were democrats. republicans represented most of the opposition.
the vote on the amendment came after nearly a full day of debate on the topic, which prominent democrats predicted would come to represent a turning point in the history of the internet.
"the future sergey brins, the future marc andreessens, of netscape and google...are going to have to pay taxes" to broadband providers, said rep. ed markey, the massachusetts democrat behind the net neutrality amendment. this vote will change "the internet for the rest of eternity," he warned.

you call people by what they accept, not by what they dont. in this sense the word atheist is redundant. i accept physical evidence and reasoned logic (pearl), the core of the scientific method. it has made our standard of life vastly better. it has also delivered us incredible destructive power. in a society like this those who act on faith (without evidence) are an increasing hazard to us all.

internet companies and consumer groups calling for a new u.s. law that would prohibit broadband providers from blocking or degrading some connections lost a major battle this week when a u.s. house of representatives committee voted down such a provision.
the house energy and commerce committee, during debate on a telecommunications reform bill, rejected an amendment that would write so-called net neutrality provisions into u.s. law. backers of a net neutrality law want congress to prohibit u.s. broadband providers from blocking or slowing their customers' connections to web sites or services that compete with services offered by the providers.
the committee rejected the amendment, on a vote of 34-22, largely along party lines, with all but one republican opposing the net neutrality amendment offered by representative ed markey, a massachusetts democrat.
late yesterday, the committee was still debating the full bill, largely focused on allowing telecom carriers to offer television services over ip (internet protocol) in competition with cable tv. the bill would create a national franchising system, instead of requiring that new television providers seek local franchises across the u.s.
backers of the markey amendment said it would prohibit broadband providers from creating a new online "tax" by charging internet companies an extra fee for faster connections to their customers.
the telecom bill, which prohibits the u.s. federal communications commission (fcc) from making new net neutrality rules, will "put at grave risk the internet as an engine of innovation, job creation and economic growth," markey said. "this will stifle openness, endanger our global competitiveness, and warp the web into a tiered internet of bandwidth haves and have-nots."

once again the us army proves that it can care less about the safety of our men and women in uniform. dragon body armor has been tested by the fbi, cia, many police forces and everyone in the world agrees that it is the best, except of course the us army. in a test for the history channel's military show, "mail call", the vest repelled nine rounds of pointed steel ammunition from an ak-47 and 35 rounds of 9 mm, all fired into a 10-by-12-inch configuration on the vest. in "test lab", also on the history channel, the vest withstood a total of 120 rounds, fired from both an ak-47 (7.62 × 39 mm) and mp5 (9 x 19 mm). in another demonstration on the discovery channel series "future weapons", a dragon skin vest withstood numerous rounds from an ak-47, an mp5, and an m4 carbine (5.56 x 45 mm), and a point-blank detonation of an m67 grenade. while the vest was heavily damaged (mainly by the grenade), there was no penetration of the actual armor.
new york - a hospital did nothing wrong when it tried to examine the rectum of a construction worker who had been hit on the head by a falling wooden beam, a jury found monday. after deliberating for about an hour, a state supreme court jury awarded nothing to brian persaud, who sued newyork-presbyterian hospital for unspecified damages. the panel found the hospital and its emergency room medical staff were not liable. persaud's lawyers, gerard marrone and gary defilippo, said he might appeal. "we're very disappointed," marrone said after the two-week trial. "it's a miscarriage of justice." the hospital's lawyer, jeffrey lawton, declined comment. marrone said persaud, 38, was injured while working at a construction site in midtown manhattan on may 20, 2003. persaud received eight stitches for a cut over his eyebrow at the hospital, but denied emergency room staffers' request to examine his rectum, the lawyer said. he said doctors told persaud the exam could help determine whether the accident caused spinal damage. when persaud resisted, staffers held him down while he begged, "please don't do that," marrone said. persaud hit a doctor while flailing around, so the staffers gave him a powerful sedative and performed the rectal exam, he said. hospital witnesses testified at trial that the exam was never completed, but marrone said that when persaud woke up he was handcuffed to a bed and had an oxygen tube down his throat and lubricant in his rectum. "he resisted because he didn't know what they were doing," defilippo said. "once he said he didn't want the rectal exam, everything should have stopped." defilippo said he believes the rectal exam was done as retaliation because his panicked client hit the doctor. a judge dismissed a misdemeanor assault charge that was filed against persaud because he hit the doctor. defilippo said his client is unemployed and has been unable to hold a job since the accident. source
