valntina’s son, danila has always been to shy. every time he went to a yard, he was attacked by his coevals. once the family even had to move house to protect danila from hooligans. but the situation repeated.

once danila went to a yard to throw out garbage. his mother was waiting for him until it began getting dark. she came out to find her son being beaten by a muscular guy. other boys and girls were standing nearby and laughing, valentina said.
the woman could not stand it any more and started visiting a local karate club. danila now also goes there to watch his mother training, but he is afraid to try karate himself.

valentina, who works as a confectioner, has already practiced martial arts on one of the bullies. since then boys have not touched her son and the guy whom she has beaten even helps her to deliver heavy bags to her flat.

Video:Snipers Hired to Protect Penguins

snipers hired to protect penguins

professional snipers have been brought in to guard a vulnerable colony of penguins in australia.

the deployment follows the mysterious deaths of nine of the flightless birds over the last two weeks.

the mutilated bodies of the animals, known as fairy penguins, were found in a national park near sydney harbor.

the main suspects are dogs and foxes. at 40cm tall, the world's smallest penguin species is clearly no match for such aggressive enemies.

to even up the fight, two snipers have been deployed as bodyguards.

they have started night patrols and have instructions to do what it takes to protect these tiny creatures.

they have joined a legion of volunteers, who have also been guarding the birds during the hours of darkness when they are most vulnerable to attack.

traps have been also been set in a concerted attempt to catch sydney's penguin killers.

Video:'Doomsday Vault' To Protect Seeds Against Disaster

'doomsday vault' to protect seeds against disaster

it sounds like something from a science fiction film — a doomsday vault carved into a frozen mountainside on a secluded arctic island ready to serve as a noah's ark for seeds in case of a global catastrophe.

but norway's ambitious project is on its way to becoming reality monday when construction begins on the svalbard global seed vault, designed to house as many as 3 million of the world's crop seeds.

prime ministers of norway, sweden, denmark, finland and iceland were to attend the cornerstone ceremony on monday morning near the town of longyearbyen in norway's remote svalbard islands, roughly 620 miles from the north pole.

norway's agriculture minister terje riis-johansen has called the vault a "noah's ark on svalbard."

its purpose is to ensure the survival of crop diversity in the event of plant epidemics, nuclear war, natural disasters or climate change, and to offer the world a chance to restart growth of food crops that may have been wiped out.

the seeds, packaged in foil, would be stored at such cold temperatures that they could last hundreds, even thousands, of years, according to the independent global crop diversity trust. the trust, founded in 2004, has also worked on the project and will help run the vault, which is scheduled to open and start accepting seeds from around the world in september 2007.

red-faced gunman sues vole after feds swoop

by nick farrell: monday 05 march 2007, 16:26

a us man has sued microsoft because its operating system was so insecure the fbi could crack it and find his collection of sex videos. michael alan crooker said that he went to great lengths to keep his computer secure because it contained sexually explicit videos of him and his girlfriend, his medical records, family photographs, and emails between him and his laywers.

however when the fbi investigated him over a gun related charge they also seized his computer. apparently they were able to access the files by making a mirror image of the hard drive.

crooker purchased a compaq presario pc loaded with windows xp, internet explorer, and several security utilities in 2002 at a circuit city in holyoke massachusetts.

crooker, has written in court papers that he "felt secure in circuit city's claims of impenetrability and security", no really.

he wants vole to pay $200,000 in compensatory and punitive damages. he said he had set internet explorer to delete his internet history every five days. "any day beyond those parameters is supposed to be permanently deleted and is not supposed to be recoverable," crooker says in the lawsuit.

he also claims compaq's drivelock security system should have stopped the fbi from looking at his hard drive.

according to information week, crooker has already reached settlements with hewlett-packard, which owns the compaq these days and circuit city.

he is still in jail over the gun charge.

Video:Alcohol May Protect Brain During An Accident

alcohol may protect brain during an accident

alcohol, a drug that is a major cause of accidents, may actually protect the brain from a life-threatening injury when an accident does occur, according to a study published this week in archives of surgery.

in the study of 38,000 patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injuries who were admitted to u.s. hospitals between 2000 and 2005, 38 percent had alcohol in their blood. such patients had a lower risk of dying of their injuries than those who hadn't been drinking.

"this study really brings up more questions than it answers," says coauthor ali salim, m.d., the program director of the general surgery residency educational program at cedars-sinai medical center, in los angeles. "it's a bad thing to say alcohol is good, especially since it's responsible for so many of these injuries. but our study suggests there may be some survival advantage for people with elevated [blood alcohol] levels."

each year, about 2 million people in the u.s. experience traumatic brain injuries, and 56,000 die and 80,000 are permanently impaired as a result. alcohol plays a role in 40 percent of car fatal crashes, and half of the patients hospitalized for trauma are intoxicated at the time of injury.

the study may help experts develop therapies for traumatic brain injuries, but it has important limitations as well, salim says.

patients in the study who had been drinking were younger, had less severe injuries, and spent less time on a ventilator or in an intensive care unit than other patients. (alcohol, however, still seemed to protect the brain after taking these factors into account.) overall, 9.7 percent of people who hadn't been drinking died after a brain injury, compared with 7.7 percent of those with alcohol in their blood.

it's not clear why alcohol might be helpful, although it could dampen the impact of catecholamines, hormones like adrenaline and dopamine that are released by the body after a traumatic injury, according to salim. "we think [the blood alcohol] may attenuate that response," he says.

alcohol may also help lower the body's core temperature, says david hovda, ph.d., a professor of neurosurgery at the university of california, los angeles, and the director of ucla's brain injury research center. lower body temperatures are known to slow cell death and swelling caused by severe brain injuries.

but alcohol's beneficial effect may be severely limited, says hovda, who was not involved with the study. he notes that the results of animal studies have been mixed. some animal research suggests that low levels of alcohol protect the brain, but the effect is lost at higher levels; others have found that alcohol lowers survival.

in the new study, researchers did not look at the amount of alcohol in the patients' blood, but they did find that alcohol was associated with a greater risk of complications, even as it seemed to lower mortality rates.

it's not clear if alcohol could be helpful if given after an accident. "giving patients [alcohol] after a traumatic brain injury is much different than having it on board during the traumatic brain injury," hovda says. the protective effect may only work when the injury occurs or may work later. "one would have to know the therapeutic time window and the dose."

using alcohol as a therapy is unlikely, but understanding how it protects some people could help scientists develop new treatments for traumatic brain injuries, salim says.

Video:Dog Protected Abandoned Newborn

dog protected abandoned newborn

(cnn) -- a dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said friday.

a resident of a rural area outside la plata called police late wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

the man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, daniel salcedo, chief of police of the province of buenos aires, told cnn.

the temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, salcedo said.

the dog had apparently carried the baby some 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

"she took it like a puppy and rescued it," salcedo said. "the doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died."

"the dog is a hero to us."

dr. egidio melia, director of the melchor romero hospital in la plata, told cnn that police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. wednesday with the baby who doctors say was only a few hours old.

though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, melia said.

the next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities the 8 pound, 13 ounce infant is hers, melia said.

the teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. she has said little about the incident.

the child has been transferred to a children's hospital in la plata, 37 miles from buenos aires.
