barnaul, russia - a siberian woman who gave birth to her 12th child — doing more than her fair share to stem russia’s population decline — was stunned to find that little nadia weighed in at a massive 17 pounds, 1 ounce.

nadia was delivered by caesarean section in the local maternity hospital in the altai region on september 17, joining eight sisters and three brothers, a local reporter said.

“we were all simply in shock,” said nadia’s mother, tatyana barabanova, 43. “what did the father say? he couldn’t say a thing — he just stood there blinking.”

“i ate everything, we don’t have the money for special foods so i just ate potatoes, noodles and tomatoes,” she told the reporter, adding that all her previous babies had weighed more than 11 pounds.

the guinness world records lists a 22 pound, 4 ounce baby boy born in italy in 1955, and a 23 pound, 8 ounce baby boy who was born in the united states in 1879 but died 11 hours later.

the average weight for most healthy newborn babies is around 7 pounds, 6 ounces, according to world health organization figures.

grand forks, n.d. (ap) - residents here have gobbled up a new record for the largest single serving of french fries. an estimated 4,518 pounds of french fries were consumed during thursday night's annual french fry feeding frenzy.

the event is held during "potato bowl u.s.a" week, which recognizes the potato industry in the red river valley and includes a weekend university of north dakota football game.

this year's total eclipsed the record of 4,410 pounds of fries set two years ago.

along with 11,000 servings of fries, organizers had more than 100 gallons of ketchup on hand.

dave gottberg, a director with the j.r. simplot french fry plant in grand forks, estimated that about 10,000 people were served.

"it was fantastic weather and the 40th anniversary and all, plus they advertised pretty well for us this year," he said.

after pursuing hogzilla ii for several hours, jamison and his father (along with guides who had high powered rifles trained on the pig, in case of a charge) were finally able to subdue their record catch.

final measurements of the pig indicate that its head is nearly five feet around and around its shoulders, nearly 6 feet. its weight is now also thought to be 1,060 pounds total.

the father and son plan to use the meat to make massive amounts of sausage, expected to come up to about 700 pounds worth of meat.

destin, fla. - six friends went to a fishing tournament looking to catch some grouper. they caught an 844-pound shark instead.

the fight by adlee bruner and friends to pull the 11-foot mako shark onto the boat from the gulf of mexico took more than an hour on saturday.

"it was tense," bruner, 47, said about the fight to land the shark, which has a mouthful of huge, fearsome teeth. "i've fished for 40 years. i've never see one that big."

bruner and his fishing buddies were on a 52-foot charter boat with capt. robert hill, about 70 miles southwest of this beach city in the florida panhandle.

the fishermen first noticed the big mako because it kept eating grouper and scamp they had hooked.

"it was like 'jaws,'" hill said.

hill hooked a two-foot amberine on as bait and tossed it out. the shark eventually hit it.

after the long fight, the shark was gaffed and eventually gave up after its tail was roped. but even then, the men could not get the big shark in the boat. they tied it to the stern with three ropes and made the four-hour trip back to land.

the shark was hoisted at the rodeo before a big crowd. it tipped the scale at 844.4 pounds.

after it was gutted, the mako still weighed 638 pounds, breaking the tournament's previous shark division record by 338 pounds.

32-year-old taquela hilton has an amazing story that has a valuable lesson for everyone. hilton, who struggled with weight problems for 12 years, was constantly told that she simply needed to lose more weight from dieting and exercise.

after a while, hilton became tired of the constant dieting and quick-handed advice from doctors.

"i quit going to doctors, every one i went to told me to lose weight and i had tried every diet i could think of."

it wasn't until hilton finally went to visit doctor jennifer cameron that she figured out what was going on within her body. she had a 93 pound benign ovarian cyst.

the thorough doctor cameron stated,"the first summer i met her, her legs were so tight, so huge her legs would just crack and weep." doctor cameron continued, "this (cyst) was just like a big balloon, a big beach ball."


from noticing the problem with hilton's legs, cameron thought that exploratory surgery would be a viable option. fortunately for hilton, the doctor's inquiry led to the shocking discovery of the 93 pound cyst, which is pictured above.

since the surgery, hilton's physique and health have greatly improved. according to cbs news, she has now lost 137 pounds and reportedly weighs 359 pounds.

ovarian cysts in and of themselves are not necessarily cancerous, and according to doctors, much smaller ovarian cysts are common and often go unnoticed and without any symptoms.

one important point ms. hilton's story brings is in regard to personal health and our bodies. when dealing with issues of your health, there is no such thing as asking too many questions or asking for doctors to look more into changes you have seen in your health.

the sugary behemoth was unveiled saturday at the woodward dream cruise classic cars event in royal oak, mich.

a guinness world records adjudicator was on hand to certify the cupcake's girth. it was more than eight times the size of the previous record holder.

the colossal cupcake took 12 hours to bake and included 800 eggs and 200 pounds each of sugar and flour.

slices of the cupcake were served in exchange for donations to the susan g. komen for the cure breast cancer organization.

ryan abood, owner of new hampshire-based gourmetgiftbaskets.com who made the cupcake, told the detroit free press that it clocked in at an estimated 2 million calories.

riverside county sheriff's deputies seized more than 28,000 pounds of marijuana wednesday after they pulled over a big rig near temecula in what was described as a routine traffic stop on the freeway, authorities said.

sheriff's spokesman sgt. dennis gutierrez said deputies stopped the 18-wheeler about 9 a.m. for making an illegal lane change on northbound interstate 15 near the san diego county line and the u.s. border patrol station.

it was unclear why sheriff's deputies were making a traffic stop on the freeway in the unincorporated area south of temecula or what prompted them to inspect the truck after stopping it. but when they looked inside the trailer, deputies discovered thousands of pounds of barely concealed marijuana in dozens of numbered cardboard bins.

the pot was wrapped in 27-pound blocks, gutierrez said.

"this big rig was stuffed -- filled from front to back," he said.

by late afternoon, law enforcement officers were still tallying the multimillion-dollar haul at an undisclosed location, but gutierrez said it is believed to be the single largest marijuana seizure ever made by the sheriff's department.

u.s. border patrol officials have reported seizures of marijuana from big rigs, especially on desert routes farther inland. but often the marijuana is mixed in with other items. in this truck, no such efforts to mask the pot were made.

the federal drug enforcement administration has assumed the investigation and federal drug charges are expected to be filed against the truck driver.

gutierrez referred questions about the driver to dea officials who could not be reached for comment wednesday night.

deputies have not been able to link the sack to a suspect.

authorities want the public to be aware that handling these types of products is not only against the law, but extremely dangerous. the indian river county sheriff's office encourages anyone that comes across illegal drugs or unknown packages to contact the local law enforcement or the united states coast guard.

greeley, colo. (ap) -- a man who told officers he was a medical marijuana provider has been arrested for allegedly standing naked in a colorado highway, pounding on passing cars and spitting at a state trooper.

dustin robbins, 27, of westminster, faces 13 counts including indecent exposure, assault and driving under the influence of marijuana.

robbins was arrested sept. 25 on u.s. 34 east of greeley. witnesses told investigators he was cursing at cars and hitting some.

two women in their 70s and 80s told deputies a naked man jumped on the hood of their car, broke windows, walked across the roof and jumped off the back. damage was estimated at $1,200.

authorities said robbins spat on the state trooper who arrested him.

deputies said he told them he was a medical marijuana provider, and they found certificates for medical marijuana but no state provider's license.

state officials said records of licensed providers aren't public.

robbins is jailed under $50,000 bail.
