mom pleads guilty to beating child's teacher

atlanta -- a 46-year-old mother pleaded guilty monday to barging into her daughter's southside high school classroom and brutally beating her teacher in february 2008.

the mother, georgia thornton, apologized in court to the teacher, felecia williams.

williams said the attack has left her with panic attacks and told the court she wanted thornton and her daughter to pay for what they did.

“i was kicked, scratched, hit, punched and some of my hair was pulled out of my scalp,” said williams.

williams explained to a judge how the classroom assault was inflicted by georgia thornton and her daughter, sequita.

prosecutors say sequita thornton was failing williams' communications class and georgia thornton went to the school and, without signing in, went to williams’ class because she thought she had given her daughter an outdated book.

the attack ended after students pulled williams away.

georgia thornton said she was under a lot of stress at the time of the attack.

“my hope today is that both georgia and sequita thornton will be held accountable for the pain and suffering they have caused me,” said williams.

“i do apologize to her for what happened. it shouldn’t have happened,” said georgia thornton.

the judge sentenced georgia thornton to 10 years, one year to serve in prison with four years probation.

sequita thornton sobbed as deputies led her mother to jail.

sequita thornton, then 17, was also charged in the attack.

sequita thornton was charged with battery on a teacher and disrupting a public school. she has asked for a jury trial and jury selection could begin monday afternoon.

Video:Saddam Trial Begins - Former Dictator Pleads Not Guilty

saddam trial begins - former dictator pleads not guilty

former iraqi leader saddam hussein has made an outspoken attack on the judicial process, before pleading not guilty at his trial in baghdad.

he refused to confirm his identity, and questioned the validity of both the trial and the judge.

"who are you? what does this court want?" saddam hussein asked the judge.

saddam and seven associates, who all pleaded not guilty, are charged with ordering the killing of 143 shia men in 1982 in dujail.

the trial is being heard in an imposing marble building that once served as the national command headquarters of saddam hussein's baath party, in the heavily fortified green zone in the iraqi capital.

tv pictures showed saddam hussein and his co-defendants being led into pens in the courtroom.

the 68-year-old former leader was wearing a dark suit with an open-necked shirt and carrying a copy of the koran. the bbc's john simpson in the court says he looked thinner and more sallow than in his last public appearance.

asked to confirm his name by chief judge rizgar mohammed amin, a kurd, saddam hussein refused.

"have you ever been a judge before?" saddam said.

amid some verbal sparring with the judge, the former iraqi leader stated: "i preserve my constitutional rights as the president of iraq. i do not recognise the body that has authorised you and i don't recognise this aggression. what is based on injustice is unjust ... i do not respond to this so-called court, with all due respect."

the trial is being presided over by five judges, with mr amin in overall charge. the identities of judges had been kept secret to ensure their safety, but mr amin's name was revealed by us officials just before the trial began.

a small number of observers and journalists are in the courtroom, but the public has been excluded.

the case is the first of many expected to be brought against the former iraqi leader.

it concerns the rounding up and execution of 143 men in dujail, a shia village north of baghdad, following an attempt there on saddam hussein's life. court officials say the case was chosen because it was the easiest and quickest case to compile.

the charge carries the death penalty, though saddam hussein and his associates have the right to appeal if they are found guilty.

prosecution lawyers are also expected to bring charges concerning the gassing of 5,000 people in the kurdish village of halabja in march 1988, and the suppression of a shia revolt following the first gulf war.

human rights groups have expressed concerns about the trial as a human rights watch report says the iraqi special tribunal "runs the risk of violating international standards for fair trials".

amnesty international has sent three delegates to baghdad to ensure saddam hussein receives a fair trial, and to oppose the death penalty if he is found guilty.

saddam hussein was captured in 2003 after the american-led invasion of iraq.

Video: Man Pleads Too Fat To Kill

man pleads too fat to kill

prosecutors cross-examining a florida man who claims he was too fat to have killed his former son-in-law tried to portray the defendant as a skilled marksman and attempted to undercut his alibi.

the 62-year-old defendant, edward ates, was at least 285 pounds when paul duncsak was shot in 2006.

ates' attorney has made the case that his client didn't have the energy to run up a staircase, accurately shoot duncsak, leave before police arrived, then make a 21-hour drive to his mother's home in louisiana, as prosecutors claim.

his doctor testified that bounding up the stairs would have caused ates to become short of breath and shake, making it difficult to keep his wrist straight enough to accurately fire a gun at someone from a distance.

on thursday, ates took the stand in his own defense but didn't delve much into his weight.

prosecutors claim ates drove from his home in fort pierce, fla., to duncsak's $1.1 million home in ramsey, about 25 miles northwest of manhattan, in august 2006 and shot him as he came home from work. police quickly suspected ates and found him 24 hours later at his mother's home in sibley, la.

defense lawyer walter lesnevich disputes that his client could have made the trip to louisiana without stopping, as prosecutors have suggested, and called upon doctors to talk about ates' physical limitations.

on wednesday, dr. michael farber, an internal medicine specialist at hackensack university medical center called it "highly improbable" that ates could have driven for 21 hours straight.

but under cross-examination by assistant bergen county prosecutor wayne mello, farber said ates' weight doesn't mean he can't fire a gun.

"basically he is obese, has some form of asthma, elevated blood pressure and diabetes," mello said. "does any of that have to do with the ability to fire a weapon?"

"no," farber replied.

on thursday, mello questioned ates about the fact that he shot at a snake during his trip to louisiana. their exchange didn't explain exactly where or when ates shot the snake, but mello was trying to infer that ates was an accurate shooter.

mello also played a wiretapped phone call ates made to his sister in louisiana after duncsak was killed. during the call, ates repeatedly goes over the timing of events to make sure they agree.

"i just need to make sure we're all saying the same thing when it comes to it," ates tells his sister. she has testified that she misled police about the day ates arrived in louisiana because her brother had asked her to lie.

duncsak, a pharmaceutical executive, and ates' daughter were involved in a bitter custody dispute after their divorce.

duncsak's mother, sophia, has said ates became vengeful toward her son after paul duncsak refused to give his father-in-law $250,000 in 2003 to keep ates' struggling golf course in okeechobee, fla., afloat.
