(ap) — ice cream made from breast milk? that's what the people for the ethical treatment of animals wants ben & jerry's homemade ice cream to consider making. the virginia-based nonprofit group sent a letter to company co-founders ben cohen and jerry greenfield on tuesday asking them to use human breast milk instead of cow's milk in their products. peta said the health of consumers and cows would benefit from the switch. ben & jerry's spokesman rob michalak said the company applauds peta's creative approach to bring attention to an issue, but believes that a mother's milk is best used by a child. here's the letter peta sent b&j's: september 23, 2008 ben cohen and jerry greenfield, cofounders ben & jerry's homemade inc. dear mr. cohen and mr. greenfield, on behalf of peta and our more than 2 million members and supporters, i'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from switzerland that would bring a unique twist to ben and jerry's. storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. if ben and jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers--and cows--would reap the benefits. using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. the late dr. benjamin spock, america's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease--america's number one cause of death. animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. after several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup. and of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around. the breast is best! won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in ben and jerry's ice cream? thank you for your consideration. sincerely, tracy reiman executive vice president source, source
"unhappy meals" featuring a knife-wielding ronald mcdonald and bloody rubber chickens are upsetting parents who say the people for the ethical treatment of animals are unfairly targeting their kids at mcdonald's restaurants across the country. peta's "mccruelty campaign" has ruffled the feathers of moms and dads in albany who say they don't want their kids exposed to any throat-slitting chickens or pictures of slaughtered poultry. "i don't want my son to be around something like this. this is not fair for a child," stephaine gipson told fox23 news in albany. "i think it's unhappy that they target children," said parent michelle natale. but the animal rights activists say kids are jaded enough by television and video games to handle the carnographic images, and intend to continue their campaign pressuring mcdonald's to use more humane means of killing chickens. "i think children and adults deserve to be told the truth — and that's that behind ronald mcdonald's smile is cruelty to animals," said peta spokeswoman lindsay rajt. rajt said most parents are usually troubled by what peta calls mcdonald's cruel treatment of chickens, and said that kids who "naturally empathize" with animals enjoy peta's presence outside the golden arches. people have changed their names to some crazy things before. this example is no exception. a nineteen-year-old staff member of the peta (people for the ethical treatment of animals) had his name legally changed to kentuckyfriedcruelty.com. kentuckyfriedcruelty.com changed his name as a protest to the supposed unethical abuse of chickens by the food chain giant kfc’s suppliers."people don't believe me at first when i tell them my name, but it never fails to spark a discussion," kentuckyfriedcruelty.com told media. by changing his name, kentuckyfriedcruelty.com hopes to promote a boycott in the peta’s ongoing anti-kfc campaign.
