patient left in ct scanner for hours

(ap) tucson, ariz. a cancer patient says she was left alone in a ct scanner for hours after a technician apparently forget about her, and she finally crawled out of the device, only to find herself locked in the closed clinic.

elvira tellez of tucson said she called her son in a panic, and he told her to call 911.

pima county sheriff's deputies arriving at the oncology office had her unlock the office door to let them in, said deputy dawn hanke, a department spokeswoman. the deputies contacted the office manager, who was not aware of the situation.

diagnosed with bone cancer, the 67-year-old tellez had been sent to the clinic for tests to see if her cancer had spread.

a technician placed her inside the large machine at about 4 p.m. on sept. 19, dimmed the lights so she could relax and told her not to move during the 25-minute procedure.

"at some point, my mom lost track of time and felt like too much time had passed, but she couldn't look at a clock or anything because it was dark," her son ariel tellez said.

after calling out, then screaming for help, she said, she spent several hours trying to free herself from the machine. finally, she wiggled out from under a heavy blanket and out of the machine. by the time deputies found her, it had been five hours since she was placed inside.

a physician who works at the practice and knew of the incident told the arizona daily star it's not the first time such a thing has happened.

"people have been left in the office after hours, when something like that happens -- it's the same sort of thing," dr. steven ketchel said. "my guess is she was lying on the table, waiting and waiting and nobody told her she could go home."

patient says dancing dentist misstepped

syracuse, n.y. — a dentist was dancing to a song on the radio while drilling on a woman's tooth, and she wound up in the hospital when the drill bit snapped off and lodged near her eye, a lawsuit alleges. brandy fanning, 31, said she had to undergo emergency surgery and spent three days in the hospital because of the october 2004 mishap.

the federal lawsuit filed last month against dr. george trusty seeks $600,000 for her medical expenses, pain and suffering.

trusty, 57, a dentist at syracuse community health center, declined to comment, as did dr. ruben cowart, the center's president and ceo.

fanning said she went to the center's emergency dental clinic after pain in a left molar started getting worse. with a root canal ruled out as an option, trusty gave her some novocain and began drilling to break up the tooth before extracting it, she said.

as trusty drilled, he was "performing rhythmical steps and movements to the song `car wash,'" which was on the radio, according to the lawsuit. then, fanning heard a snap.

trusty tried to use a metal hook to pull the bit out, but that only pushed it farther up, driving it through the sinus and bone near her eye socket, the lawsuit alleged.

after first minimizing the problem, trusty talked to an oral surgeon to set up an appointment _ and then told fanning she needed to get to an emergency room immediately, according to the lawsuit.

she claimed he had initially told she would likely sneeze the drill bit out, but doctors said later that if she really had sneezed, the drill bit could have blinded her left eye.

fanning said she sued because trusty failed on a promise to pay her medical bills. she said she still suffers facial swelling, nerve damage and chronic infections.

the suit is in federal court because the health center operates under federal law.

Video:Transplant Patient Can Feel Face

transplant patient can feel face

the french woman who had the first face transplant in the world, says she has feeling in the new tissue, in an interview she gave to the french sunday paper le journal du dimanche.

in november of last year, doctors replaced a gaping hole in her face with the partial face of a donor. the transplant included the nose, mouth and chin.

dinoire, who lost part of her face after being viciously attacked by her pet labrador, says she is glad that thanks to the doctors, she is able to go outdoors again.

although she still has difficulty pronouncing sounds as “b” and ”p” properly, she believes that in time she will have no trouble with speaking.

she says she still only leaves her apartment if accompanied and has not yet replaced the mirrors she removed from her home after the accident.

the difficult part is getting to know herself again, she said, since she now looks considerably different than she used to look before her dog attacked her.

Video:Face Transplant Patient: ‘I'm Not A Monster’

face transplant patient: ‘i'm not a monster’

cleveland (ap) — when connie culp heard a little kid call her a monster because of the shotgun blast that left her face horribly disfigured, she pulled out her driver's license to show the child what she used to look like. years later, as the nation's first face transplant recipient, she's stepped forward to show the rest of the world what she looks like now.

her expressions are still a bit wooden, but she can talk, smile, smell and taste her food again. her speech is at times a little tough to understand. her face is bloated and squarish. her skin droops in big folds that doctors plan to pare away as her circulation improves and her nerves grow, animating her new muscles.

but culp had nothing but praise for those who made her new face possible.

"i guess i'm the one you came to see today," the 46-year-old ohio woman said at a news conference at the cleveland clinic, where the groundbreaking operation was performed. but "i think it's more important that you focus on the donor family that made it so i could have this person's face."

until tuesday, culp's identity and how she came to be disfigured were a secret.

culp's husband, thomas, shot her in 2004, then turned the gun on himself. he went to prison for seven years. his wife was left clinging to life. the blast shattered her nose, cheeks, the roof of her mouth and an eye. hundreds of fragments of shotgun pellet and bone splinters were embedded in her face. she needed a tube into her windpipe to breathe. only her upper eyelids, forehead, lower lip and chin were left.

a plastic surgeon at the cleveland clinic, dr. risal djohan, got a look at her injuries two months later. "he told me he didn't think, he wasn't sure, if he could fix me, but he'd try," culp recalled.

she endured 30 operations to try to fix her face. doctors took parts of her ribs to make cheekbones and fashioned an upper jaw from one of her leg bones. she had countless skin grafts from her thighs. still, she was left unable to eat solid food, breathe on her own, or smell.

Video:Cancer Drug Wiped Patient's Fingerprints

cancer drug wiped patient's fingerprints

a patient who took an anti-cancer drug lost his fingerprints, which caused him to be detained for hours when he tried to visit the united states.

the 62-year-old patient had been taking capecitabine, a follow-up drug for chemotherapy for cancer of the head and neck, singaporean specialist eng-huat tan and colleagues recounted in a letter to the british journal annals of oncology.

capecitabine's side effects include inflammation of the palms and soles of the feet. the skin can peel, bleed and develop ulcers, and with time can cause fingerprints to be eradicated, dr tan said.

the patient, named as mr s, had been prescribed the drug as long-term maintenance treatment but was unaware this had wiped out his fingerprints.

"in december 2008, after more than three years of capecitabine, he went to the united states to visit his relatives," the letter said.

"he was detained at the airport customs for four hours because immigration officers could not detect his fingerprints."

foreign visitors arriving at us airports are asked to provide fingerprints which are then matched against a database of visa holders and a list of suspected criminals.

mr s was eventually allowed to enter after officials were satisfied he was not a security threat, dr tan said. he was also advised to travel with a letter from his cancer doctor to explain his fingerprint-free condition.

the letter urged patients who are put on long-term courses of capecitabine to be aware of the unusual side effect.

Video:Doctor Allegedly Mocked Obese Woman, Told Patient To Shoot Self

doctor allegedly mocked obese woman, told patient to shoot self

a doctor allegedly told a patient she is so fat she might only be attractive to black men.

he also allegedly advised another to shoot herself to end her suffering after brain surgery.

rude and offensive? yes, said a new hampshire judge. but worthy of discipline from the new hampshire board of medicine? no, the judge ruled in ordering the board to stop disciplinary proceedings against dr. terry bennett.

the judge made clear that while he doesn't condone the remarks, bennett has the right to speak bluntly to patients.

bennett has denied telling the woman she was so obese that few men would find her attractive, but he said he has seen polls that support the notion that black men like fat women.

bennett said he plans to sue everyone involved for malicious prosecution. the state is considering an appeal.

us patient in oxygen mask lights cigarette, ignites hospital fire

a patient wearing an oxygen mask tried to light a cigarette in his hospital room, sparking a fire that forced the evacuation of more than 100 patients, destroyed the room and melted medical equipment, officials said.

a nurse rescued the man from his burning bed shortly after the thursday night blaze started. he suffered serious burns and was taken to the burn unit at another dallas hospital. no one else was hurt, hospital officials said.

"he somehow got the strength to smoke a cigarette with a non-removable mask," dallas fire-rescue capt. paul martinez said. "i don't know how he did it, but he did it."

firefighters extinguished the two-alarm fire after about 45 minutes, and the evacuated patients were returned to their rooms. hospital sprinklers kept the blaze mostly in the hospital room, said fire lieut. joel lavender.

officials did not release the man's name and condition friday, or why he was originally in the hospital, citing medical privacy laws.

Video:Dentist Extracts Payment From Patient

dentist extracts payment from patient

article submitted by ug7433.

a german dentist overpowered a female patient in her home and yanked out two dental bridges from her mouth because she had failed to pay her bill.

the dentist from the bavarian town of neu-ulm is now under investigation for assault and theft after arriving at the woman's home with his medical instruments to perform the unwanted surgery.

according to police, the dentist knocked on the door of the 35-year-old woman on monday evening and without saying a word forced her into her living room and tied her hands.

in a scene reminiscent of the movie marathon man, he then forced open her mouth and removed the £320 worth of dental work which the woman's insurance company had refused to pay.

according to the victim, he never said a word.

"the dentist is being investigated for assault for the way he forced open her mouth, and theft for taking the bridges," said christian owsinski a police spokesman.

"the woman was in pain when she showed up at the police station."

mr owsinski said the dentist, who has not been named, had not been arrested.

if convicted he could face discipline from both the health insurance company and the dental association that could jeopardize his practice.

Video:Coma Patient Was Conscious For 23 Years

coma patient was conscious for 23 years

a car crash victim who was believed to have been in a coma for the past 23 years has been conscious the whole time.

rom houben was paralysed but could not let doctors know that he could hear every word they were saying, reports the daily mail.

"i dreamed myself away," said mr houben, now 46, who doctors thought was in a persistent vegatative state.

doctors conducted a series of coma tests before concluding that his consciousness was "extinct".

but three years ago, new hi-tech scans showed his brain was still functioning almost completely normally.

mr houben said: "all that time i just literally dreamed of a better life. frustration is too small a word to describe what i felt."

his case has only just been revealed in a scientific paper released by the man who 'saved' him, top neurological expert dr steven laureys.

"medical advances caught up with him," said dr laureys, who believes there may be many similar cases of false comas around the world.

mr houben, a former martial arts enthusiast, was paralysed in 1983.

he is never likely to leave hospital, but as well as his computer he now has a special device above his bed which lets him read books while lying down.

mr houben said: "i shall never forget the day when they discovered what was truly wrong with me - it was my second birth.

"i want to read, talk with my friends via the computer and enjoy my life now that people know i am not dead."
