britain is living up to its reputation as a nation of dog lovers, with many owners feeding their four-legged friends healthier and tastier meals than they serve up for themselves.
a study of 1,337 british dog owners found that 18 per cent fed their pampered pet pooches a better diet than their own, giving them fresh dishes instead of tinned food.
consequently 21 per cent of dogs enjoyed cheese, 15 per cent were given fish and 9 per cent chomped on vegetables.
more than a quarter of respondents said they would eat the food they bought their dog.
however, the gourmet meals came at a price.
the study, for direct line insurance, concluded pet owners pay out 2.3 billion pounds a year on their dogs' dinners.
ten per cent of respondents admitted their pet had developed a weight problem.

january 05/09. newly released surveillance video showed what happened during an attempted robbery inside a phoenix jewelry store earlier this month. police said gregory mills, 24, and jason buckingham, 27, initially went into the store and tried to sell a watch. the store owner told the men he could not purchase the watch and the men left. about 10 minutes later, the two men came back and sprayed the owner in the face with mace. one of the men then used a metal baton and smashed the glass to a jewelry display cabinet. the 61-year-old store owner told police he feared for his life so he took out a handgun from his pocket and fired several shots at the men, hitting them each one time.
a german shepherd dog saved his owner's life by calling for an ambulance when the man suffered a seizure. police officers in scottsdale, arizona, could hear the whimpering and barking of buddy after receiving the 911 call. dispatcher chris trott can be heard on a recording of the incident saying: "hello, this is 911. hello... can you hear me? is there somebody there you can give the phone to?" police were sent to joe stalnaker's home and after about three minutes buddy is heard on the recording barking loudly when they arrive. mr stalnaker's address was flagged in the scottsdale system's with a notification that a trained assistance dog could call 911 when the owner was incapacitated. police explained mr stalnaker adopted buddy at the age of eight weeks from michigan-based paws with a cause, which trains assistance dogs. buddy, now 18 months old, has been trained to press programmed buttons until a 911 operator is on the line, should his owner suffer seizure symptoms. this was the third time he has called the emergency services on behalf of mr stalnaker. scottsdale police sergeant mark clark said mr stalnaker spent two days in a hospital but has recovered from the seizure. he said: "it's pretty incredible. even the veteran dispatchers - they haven't heard of anything like this." sgt clark added mr stalnaker's seizures are the result of a head injury he suffered about 10 years ago during a military training exercise. source
poor dog can't keep up with its evil owner! the guy taking the shot laughs as the dog falls off.
police aren't sure how else to explain it. but when an officer walked into an apartment thursday night to answer a 911 call, an orange-and-tan striped cat was lying by a telephone on the living room floor. the cat's owner, gary rosheisen, was on the ground near his bed having fallen out of his wheelchair.
rosheisen said his cat, tommy, must have hit the right buttons to call 911.
"i know it sounds kind of weird," officer patrick daugherty said, unsuccessfully searching for some other explanation.
rosheisen said he couldn't get up because of pain from osteoporosis and ministrokes that disrupt his balance. he also wasn't wearing his medical-alert necklace and couldn't reach a cord above his pillow that alerts paramedics that he needs help.
daugherty said police received a 911 call from rosheisen's apartment, but there was no one on the phone. police called back to make sure everything was ok, and when no one answered, they decided to check things out.
that's when daugherty found tommy next to the phone.
rosheisen got the cat three years ago to help lower his blood pressure. he tried to train him to call 911, unsure if the training ever stuck.
the phone in the living room is always on the floor, and there are 12 small buttons - including a speed dial for 911 right above the button for the speaker phone.
"he's my hero," rosheisen said.

seems whoever made this sign also wanted to give a special message to dogs that can read.
firefighters responded to a fire call, but got far more than expected. jeffrey cullen, 58, used the fake fire call to lure the men to a tree where his cat was stuck. when the firemen refused to get the cat, cullen pulled out his gun. the firemen and a twelve-year old boy ran for their lives.the three person crew knew something was amiss when they responded to the fire call and saw no smoke or fire. instead the allegedly deceptive cullen insisted that he wanted his cat brought down from a tree and said that he knew the only response he would get was for a fire call.according to reports the battalion chief told cullen to wait for animal control or wait for the cat to get hungry and come down.clearly, cullen did not like this response as he pulled out a small black revolver and emerged from his house whilst shooting, all upset over a little cat in a tree.fortunately, the firefighters along with a young child managed to flee the scene uninjured. deputies arrested cullen after a brief standoff and he is now being charged on four felony counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the mohave county sheriff's department.source

a traffic warden put a ticket on a car which had been involved in a crash car while its owner was receiving hospital treatment. kristian bennison, 24, was taken to hospital after his volkswagen hit another car. he and his mother managed to push the badly damaged car to one side of the road, where they left it so mr bennison could be treated for shock and minor injuries. but when debra bennison returned to the car to put a note on it to explain that they were waiting for a tow truck to take it away, she found that a so-called "blue meanie" had ticketed it. mrs bennison, who lives with kristian in bowdon, cheshire, said: "i could not believe my eyes. it was obvious the car had been involved in a bad smash, there was glass all over the road. i'm just grateful no one was hurt. "i will be appealing against this ticket by find it distressing and unnecessary hassle at an already stressful time." trafford council's head of transportation geoff ball said the parking contractor would be warned to be less free with its fines. "the car did receive a parking ticket as it was left on double yellow lines," he said. "however, the council has discretion to cancel tickets in exceptional circumstances and this ticket was cancelled as soon as we were aware of the circumstances. "we will be working with the parking contractor to avoid this kind of situation happening in future." motorists were last year forced to pay millions of pounds in illegally-issued parking fines. official figures released earlier this year showed around 80 councils continued to take money from drivers despite being told the tickets were illegal by the national parking adjudicator. the latest example of overkeen wardens saw a motorist in edinburgh who had his wheels stolen from his car issued with a ticket as he waited for his insurance company to pick it up. source
a parrot is taking prozac for depression following the death of its owner. fred, an african grey parrot, was owned by george dance, who had rasied him from a chick. after mr dance died nine months ago, fred became depressed and bit off all of his neck feathers. he also began to bob his head up and down all day as a result of his low mood. the bird has now been prescribed a twice-daily liquid dose of a bird-friendly version of prozac, called clomicalm. george's widow helen, from somerset, told the sun: "he has been in quite a state since my husband died. "fred was very close to george and became depressed." according to experts, tropical birds are extremely emotional and the number who require anti-depressants is growing. late last year, a collie-labrador cross called winnie was given clomicalm after it began to cry and pace nervously. an animal behaviourist diagnosed winnie with canine separation anxiety, and the mood-altering drug now helps her to cope. fred the parrot features in a cutting edge programme called special needs pets on channel 4 at 9pm tonight. source
gloucester, mass. - a prosciutto-wielding meat thief in gloucester met his match when a restaurant owner fought off the assault by slamming the thief's face with a ham. joe scola of scola's place heard a noise in his restaurant last wednesday, then saw a man fleeing with his arms full of meat from scola's freezer. scola caught up, and started taking the meat back. that's when the man raised a five pound log of frozen prosciutto over his head, presumably to whack scola. luckily, scola had his own frozen pig product on hand. scola told the gloucester daily times that he slammed the ham in the man's face, leaving a gash. the thief was so stunned, he dropped the meat and ran. police searched the area, but couldn't find the suspect. source
dozy thieves fled empty handed after stealing a caravan in sweden - while the owner was fast asleep inside. terrified holidaymaker bjorn feldbaek woke up to find himself being towed away in his mobile home after the crooks hitched it to their getaway car in skovde. but he sent them packing when they stopped and broke into the caravan by screaming so loudly that the thieves abandoned their car and fled on foot. feldbaek said: "i woke up to find the caravan hurtling down the road. i had no idea what was going on and was scared stiff. "then it stopped and i heard someone opening the door and when i saw the thieves i just started screaming and screaming. they looked as scared as i did and just ran off. i guess it wasn't quite what they were expecting." police have now launched a search for the crooks. source
a kenyan man persuaded police to arrest his pet dog after it ate his rent money. robert njeru, 25, of nakuru town, took his dog to the local police station after it chewed up almost 3,000 kenyan shillings (£20). the farmer had left his rent money for the month on his bed in the morning when he went to work. when he returned that night, all that remained were a few shreds of banknotes on the floor. the furious mr njeru marched his dog down to the police station and demanded that officers lock up the animal. police reportedly refused him until he paid them 50 shillings to make it worth their while. however on hearing about the story, the district police boss fired the police officer for accepting a bribe and released the dog back to its owner. local police spokesman steven karungu said: "it was a really stupid thing for the police to lock up a dog after being given a bribe. it degrades the police force in this area. "it is true the dog ate his master's money, but it was because of his own carelessness, and he should deal with his problems by himself, and not involve the police." mr njeru has still not forgiven his dog and has put it up for sale for 20 shillings, the equivalent of 10p. source
taos, n.m. - larry whitten marched into this northern new mexico town in late july on a mission: resurrect a failing hotel. the tough-talking former marine immediately laid down some new rules. among them, he forbade the hispanic workers at the run-down, southwestern adobe-style hotel from speaking spanish in his presence (he thought they'd be talking about him), and ordered some to anglicize their names. no more martin (mahr-teen). it was plain-old martin. no more marcos. now it would be mark. whitten's management style had worked for him as he's turned around other distressed hotels he bought in recent years across the country. the 63-year-old texan, however, wasn't prepared for what followed. his rules and his firing of several hispanic employees angered his employees and many in this liberal enclave of 5,000 residents at the base of the sangre de cristo mountains, where the most alternative of lifestyles can find a home and where spanish language, culture and traditions have a long and revered history. "i came into this landmine of anglos versus spanish versus mexicans versus indians versus everybody up here. i'm just doing what i've always done," he says. former workers, their relatives and some town residents picketed across the street from the hotel. "i do feel he's a racist, but he's a racist out of ignorance. he doesn't know that what he's doing is wrong," says protester juanito burns jr., who identified himself as prime minister of an activist group called los brown berets de nuevo mexico. once whitten arrived to the hotel, he claims that he immediately noticed that the hotel employees were hostile to his management style and worried they might start talking about him in spanish. "because of that, i asked the people in my presence to speak only english because i do not understand spanish," whitten says. "i've been working 24 years in texas and we have a lot of spanish people there. i've never had to ask anyone to speak only english in front of me because i've never had a reason to." some employees were fired, whitten says, because they were hostile and insubordinate. he says they called him "a white (n-word)." source
st. paul, minn. — a golden valley day care provider used pajamas as straitjackets and pinned young children in her care to mattresses as a form of punishment, authorities said in charges filed in hennepin county district court. the charges filed monday against arvilla marie lilly meinhardt, 70, said police found pajamas with large safety pins in them and a mattress that appeared to have pin holes in it at the home day care center meinhardt runs for children under age 4. police found out about meinhardt's alleged punishment tactic from a 7-year-old girl who used to attend the day care. meinhardt was charged with malicious punishment of a child and false imprisonment, which are both gross misdemeanors. according to the criminal complaint, meinhardt told a police detective she had been using the practice to control children for about eight years on children who were 2 and 3 years old. a straitjacket was created by taking a child's arms out of the pajama sleeves and pinning the sleeves behind their backs, meinhardt said, according to court documents. the pajama legs would be pinned together at the children's calves. the pajama zipper would also be pinned so that the children could not get out of the pajamas, she told police. meinhardt did not tell children's parents about the practice, authorities said. meinhardt, along with her husband and daughter, were arrested friday but have since been released. meinhardt's husband and daughter have not been charged with any crimes. meinhardt's attorney, john leunig, said tuesday that he's unhappy prosecutors and reports in the news media are making it look like his client is some kind of monster. leunig said meinhardt has a clean criminal record. "the truth is she has dozens and dozens of happy clients," leunig said. "she's a nice lady and she's never done anything wrong in her life." source
