article submitted by geoblaze. researchers from the university of tokyo have teamed up with members of the japan origami airplane association to develop a paper aircraft capable of surviving the flight from the international space station to the earth’s surface. the researchers are scheduled to begin testing the strength and heat resistance of an 8 centimeter (3.1 in) long prototype on january 17 in an ultra-high-speed wind tunnel at the university of tokyo’s okashiwa campus (chiba prefecture). in the tests, the origami glider — which is shaped like the space shuttle and has been treated to withstand intense heat — will be subjected to wind speeds of mach 7, or about 8,600 kilometers (5,300 miles) per hour. a large spacecraft such as the space shuttle can reach speeds of up to mach 20 (over 15,200 mph) when it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere, and friction with the air heats the outer surface to extreme temperatures. the much lighter origami aircraft, which the researchers claim will come down more slowly, is not expected to burn up on re-entry. no launch date has been set for the paper spaceplane, but shinji suzuki, an aerospace engineering professor at the university of tokyo, is thinking ahead. “we hope the space station crew will write a message of peace on the plane before they launch it,” says suzuki. “we don’t know where in the world the plane will land, but it would be nice to send a message to whoever finds it.” source, source & source. have any interesting articles you'd like to share? article request thread.
"french origami master eric joisel recently appeared on japanese tv to show off some of his creations. # each figure in the orchestra is made of one piece of paper, with the instruments made from a separate piece of paper. it took about a 1 meter by 1 meter piece of paper for each of the figures. # towards the end of the clip we are shown some examples of the planning sheets he creates for his origami masterpieces. one plan uses a single sheet of paper to create a figure coming out of a box. the area outlined in blue shows the part of the paper that eventually created the box."

the mighty microsoft marketing machine is back in action this week, unveiling the device behind the company’s much-hyped and highly secretive “origami project” at a trade show in germany.
the ultramobile pc, as it was recently called by mika krammer, a marketing director for microsoft's windows mobile unit, will be the ultimate in handheld technology. it will run on windows xp and have a seven and a half inch touch-sensitive screen.
weighing in at less than two and a half pounds and with a thickness of about an inch, it will be roughly the size of a large pocketbook. its capabilities are said to be that of a laptop or pc. later versions will run on the new windows vista operating system and it will rely heavily on expanding wifi technology. hitting stores sometime this spring, it is sure to be a huge seller.
or will it? with the 360 fiasco fresh in the minds of the consumer populace and the shelves at the stores still mysteriously lacking the very same self-proclaimed god of all gaming systems, how can we be sure this won’t be more of the same? bill gates has laughed at us before, and like jilted lovers we approach anything he does nowadays with extreme caution. we are not without good reason.
it goes without saying that this machine has been and will continue to be severely over-hyped. however, as a society we have the unfortunate habit of expecting too much. when taken away from the overly critical aspect of the market this new device will most likely be a very cool little piece of technology.
you will hear a lot about this newest creation in the next few months. until spring, however, and john and jane doe are allowed to get their hands on these little gems of the future, it will all be pure speculation.
