beijing — the upcoming beijing olympics is more than just a point of pride for china _ it's such an important part of the national consciousness that nearly 3,500 children have been named for the event, a newspaper reported sunday. most of the 3,491 people with the name "aoyun," meaning olympics, were born around the year 2000, as beijing was bidding to host the 2008 summer games, the beijing daily reported, citing information from china's national identity card database. the vast majority of people named aoyun are male, the newspaper said. only six live in beijing. the report didn't say where the others live. names related to the olympics don't just stop with "olympics." more than 4,000 chinese share their names with the beijing games mascots, the "five friendlies." the names are bei bei (880 people), jing jing (1,240), huan huan (1,063), ying ying (624) and ni ni (642). when put together, the phrase translates to "beijing welcomes you!" chinese have increasingly turned to unique names as a way to express a child's individuality. in a country with a population of 1.3 billion, 87 percent share the same 129 family names. that's why 5,598 people have the same name as basketball player yao ming and 18,462 share a moniker with star hurdler liu xiang, according to the beijing daily report. parents have turned to unusual combinations of letters, numbers and symbols when choosing their child's name, li yuming, deputy director of the national language commission, told the xinhua news agency in an august interview. at least one couple wanted to call their child "1a," he said, while others use the e-mail address symbol (@/at), which in chinese is pronounced "aita," meaning "love him." source
choosing outfits for work, nights out, dinner parties, holidays, gym and other activities means the average female will spend 287 days rifling through their wardrobe. the biggest chunk of that time is used up picking a killer ensemble for friday or saturday nights out or selecting the right clothes for a holiday. experts found on average women spend 16 minutes every weekday morning deciding what to wear and around 14 minutes on a saturday or sunday morning. a spokesman for clothes giant matalan, which compiled the results after polling 2,491 women, said: "what you wear has a direct impact on how you feel about yourself and it is important a woman feels exceptional in her outfit. "whatever the occasion your clothes portray an image and we understand this is fundamentally important to women." the study - which was based on an adult lifetime from the age of 16 to 60 - found most women will spend around 20 minutes deciding what to wear before hitting the town on a weekend night. week nights out can take up to 20 minutes a time too. deciding on what clothes to take on holiday uses up to 52 minutes each time. while on holiday, ten minutes a morning will be taken up trying to find an acceptable outfit with another ten minutes spent picking evening clothes. on top of that dinner parties, christmas parties and black tie events - at around 36 minutes a time six times a year - adds up to three and a half days. the study also found on average women will try on two outfits each morning before coming to a final decision. and one in two women spend 15 minutes the night before work working out what to wear. source no word on how long the typical woman spends in the bathroom.
st. petersburg — the quest for a gleaming toilet and a lack of knowledge of chemistry led a 44-year-old man to accidentally create a deadly bathroom cleaner early thursday morning. the result: a hazardous materials team was called to clear michael newton's house before he was taken to bayfront medical center complaining of shortness of breath and irritation to his lungs and eyes from the chlorine gas cloud he created. exposure to the gas — which has been used as a weapon of mass destruction — can cause severe illness or death. newton, of 4301 tuna drive se, combined bleach and an ammonia-based product to "make a stronger bathroom cleaner," st. petersburg fire and rescue spokesman lt. joel granata said. he was overcome moments after spraying the solution and called 911. he was waiting outside when numerous fire and hazardous materials crews arrived around 6 a.m. firefighters ventilated the house and scrubbed his walls to alleviate the strong stench of cleaning solutions, according to st. petersburg fire rescue. source
london-- a briton who cost the insurance industry some 1.6 million pounds by staging almost 100 car crashes as part of a scam to win fraudulent payouts, was jailed for 4-1/2 years on wednesday. mohammed patel, 24, charged 500 pounds a time to stage accidents which enabled fraudsters to claim an average of 17,000 pounds from their insurers. police said he staged at least 92 crashes between 2005 and 2008, each time persuading the other driver to believe they were at fault. the plot was uncovered after workers in an office block by the main a34 road in cheadle, near manchester, became suspicious about a regular number of crashes taking place at a nearby roundabout. axa insurance, one of the firms caught up in the scam, investigated and contacted police. detectives found that patel deliberately caused crashes for his clients by braking suddenly so the vehicle behind could not avoid a collision. the claimants then demanded compensation from the victim's insurance firm for personal injury, legal fees, courtesy cars, and often with the damage to the cars fabricated. manchester's minshull street crown court heard that fraudsters were able to claim on average 17,000 pounds from insurance firms for each of the crashes patel caused, the press association reported. patel himself raked in around 46,000 pounds for his role, and from his earnings he treated his girlfriend to gifts, two luxury cars and foreign holidays, police said. "patel was prepared to put lives in danger to make money," said sergeant mark beales. "this abuse of the insurance claims system has implications for all law-abiding road users." patel, from bolton, admitted 17 charges including conspiracy to defraud, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified. another 24 co-conspirators are also due to be sentenced for their role in the scam. "the cost of insurance fraud adds on average 44 pounds to every policyholder's insurance premium annually," said john beadle, chairman of the insurance fraud bureau. source
a 1500-tonne boulder came within metres of crushing a sleeping family of four after breaking free from a large overhanging rock face on black friday. jenny and michael day were asleep in their wyberba home near stanthorpe on the granite belt in southern queensland when they were jolted awake by an "almighty crash" about 3am. "we thought a jet had crashed at first. it was just such a loud noise accompanied by a sort of squealing," mrs day told the courier-mail. they had to wait until daylight to discover the offending object – and could barely believe what they saw. "my husband rushed back inside with his camera and showed me the pictures he took," mrs day said. "i said, 'holy crap'!" the enormous boulder had broken off a large rock face overhanging their property and tumbled about 150m. "about 50m more and we would have been gone. it would have completely crushed the house," mrs day said. neighbour trevor cooper said in 32 years of living in wyberba he had never seen a rock of that size come adrift before. "if it had gone another roll, there would've been nothing to stop it. it would've gained momentum again and wiped out the house," mr cooper said. queensland university of technology geology expert david murphy said the boulder was a time bomb. "the fracture along which the boulder broke must have originally started some time ago and has slowly spread from the top left to the bottom right until finally breaking completely," dr murphy said. "it was simply a matter of time." he said the days would be well advised to get a geotechnical engineer to inspect the rest of the rock face. mrs day said they would just have to live with the rock, planted firmly next to the water tank.
